regens, and urea

I bought my 2012 about 3 weeks ago, and so far I haven't seen or heard a thing about regens, or urea. I've put about 3-4 k miles on it since then. I'm just wondering what I should expect for regens? How will I know I'm the truck is "regenerating"? I mostly drive empty on the highway. with a light foot.

Also how many miles before I should expect to have to add urea?

Thanks

And is anyone still selling tuners to delete the egr/dpf/urea systems?

You've had quite a few regenerations at this point. It's operating as designed by not bothering you.
For the stock info system after the 3 second message, you can watch your instant fuel economy screen and it'll be very low for the duration of the regeneration and return to normal when it's done.

DEF varies for each owner but a good average is 5,000 miles. You'll have plenty of warning by the info screen when DEF is needed.

So should there be a notification when a regen starts? I have literally never seen an alert or noticed a drivability difference whatsoever.

And how long would I expect it to last?

Sorry for all the questions, the only other diesel I own right now is a '85 dt466 in my bucket truck.

There is a 'cleaning exhaust filter' message that will pop up on the screen for a couple seconds. If you are watching the road you will probably miss it. You shouldn't notice any drivability issues unless maybe you are towing extra heavy.

My complete regens last around 20-25 miles.

The urea or DEF is suppose to last several thousand miles if traveling empty. We just had a big discussion here in a thread about this. When to fill, not fill etc.

You will get a message when you start getting low with plenty of miles before you need to fill it.

I fill mine around 200 miles to empty. The system holds up to 5 gal.

Blue def from walmart works just fine. No reason to buy from the dealer and pay extra.

Regens are probably happening around 300 miles for you and probably lasting 6-10 miles. It should not interfere with your normal driving. It appears to be working as designed. If you stop somewhere and notice a smell and your exhaust is making noises because the metal is expanding and contracting then you were in the middle of regen.

I have seen the message a couple of times by accident in 24000 miles on my 2012. Never have seen a DEF message, but I dump DEF in every 3 months while washing it. I dont notice a dang thing even when pulling the toyhauler. I do see regen a lot on my edge CTS they start long before the message comes on the screen )which is how i saw the cleaning exhaust message....i waited and watched a lot and a second or two it was gone. Enjoy your ride. The exhaust tips of my truck are still as clean as when i bought it. The EPA would be proud. I do a couple of manual regens with the CTS when it goes into regen on its own as i am pulling up to the house.....which is when my truck always wants to regen and it never gets started.

Like Rattler1 said, you shouldn't notice any different driving characteristics, other than a drop in mileage, during a regen. If you stop the truck before regen completes enough times you'll get the same "cleaning exhaust filter" that you have to acknowledge. On the DEF, it lasts a long time. I deleted my truck at 5,800 miles and prior to that added about 2 gallons @ 3,000+ miles (info center showed half full before adding) as Senix stated, it varies on driving conditions / style, etc.
Don't overthink it too much, just enjoy the truck.

Y'all likely solved one of my mysteries. Two days ago I noticed my MPGs were only in the 15's whereas they had been 18's (and even briefly topped 20). I wondered why it was so low.

Even more surprising is I was showing it off to Rusty AxleRod, a local fellow who's very active on the 6.0. forum. He was driving it during this period and asked about regens, my response was I hadn't seen one yet.

I guess it is virtually invisible.

working as designed. My regens typically last about 6 miles, when I have them.

You will see very few if towing any significant weight.

If you want to monitor the regens get a Scan Gauge II or something similar. I have mine set up to monitor the soot level and it indicates if the regen is on or off. Typically with mine, the regen starts when the soot reaches 3-3.5, and stops around .8. This takes about 20 minutes on the highway, longer on the back roads.

Nice truck Army RET! It's very cool that it can make that kind of power and mileage and still run clean like that. Nothing wrong with taking care of the environment, especially if it's that unnoticeable. For some reason I imagined it rolling coal for a few miles when it was in regen. Thanks again for the ride!

for some of the 08-10, you will get some white smoke at the start of a regen, then it clears up.

What the OTR's on the road. You can tell when they are in regen.

The only useful reason for me knowing would be so I can run it until complete; if its a quick light notification (that's easily missed) then I may shut it down before complete.

It will start back into regen when it needs to. I had mine going in and out of regen 3 or 4 times once when I was doing a bunch of short errands around town.
