a/c compressor won't engage

98 E350 Chateau - V-10 325k.

Rattling A/C compressor, added 2 oz. oil charge, rattle stopped momentarily.
Looked at clutch on compressor- it had only 1 of 3 rubber cushions left....

Replaced with a used/good clutch unit- worked / cooled at idle then test drove-and then compressor clutch stopped engagement.

Bought new a/c clutch and installed/gapped properly- no worky!!!!

Checked/jumped low/high pressure switch connectors- nothing

Connector at a/c clutch no power.

Checked fuse 13 (?)- ok.

Blower fuse- ok.

Dash switch seems to work properly.

What/where is another fuse/ circuit breaker????

Looked in manual, searched here and online -no info......

My pc is sloooooooooow on this site, like having dial-up!!!!!

Any help appreciated, thanks, John

OK, after rain stopped I tested low and high pressure switches, 12 volts at each connector.
Ohm test on low press switch shows continuity. Voltage test at Low press switch
while Hi pressure connector was off showed no voltage (no continuity while dis-connected, therefore Hi pressure switch is good.)

No volts at a/c clutch connector- wiring or resistor is bad?, I believe resistor is IN wiring harness near a/c clutch connection???

There is an A/C clutch diode that might be at issue--post this same question in the A/C or Electrical forums.

Found that connector at a/c clutch was bad.

Stripped wires and sistered in another, re-taped and put in service til I can get a good one from a junkyard.

Also, I stripped the harness back and found the diode or resistor. This would drive someone nuts looking for a problem...

I took pics

Bad connector, dis-assembled

of bad connector and exposed harness.

Not really---following an EVTM showing that circuit the connectors and other components are clearly indicated making trouble shooting fairly easy.

Glad you got it sorted out!

I would also be suspicious of your compressor. At least my experience has been that the clutches don't wear out until the compressor is having issues and dragging on the clutch. Nothing to loose at this point by just running it, but if your AC is anemic this could be the issue. With a depressurized system you can disconnect the small end fitting to the evaporator core and pull the orifice tube. If you have glitter like stuff in it, your compressor is shot and the system needs to be flushed to get the grit out.
