Dana 44 front axle problems

So I have an issue. I take my truck mud bogging a lot so I know things will eventually break, most recently we had an incident where we hit a bump that jerked me forward and into the 2wd to 4wd shifter and shifted from 4wd to 2wd while moving with my foot on the gas. There was a loud CLUNK from the front end and kept knocking when I was driving out of the bog. Drove real slow in 4wd and had a buddy outside watching, about every revolution or so there would be a good sized knock and itd feel like you're going over a small bump (this was on a flat paved road). I've opened the differential up and everything is fine and spins good, all teeth are there, checked the hubs and those are fine. Driveline and pinion are good too. Could this be a broken axle shaft? Can you guys help me diagnose this? Thank you guys

That's what I'd be suspecting.

Set it up on stands, shift the case into neutral, and spin the tires by hand.

Thanks for the quick replies. Forgot to add, it rides fine in 2wd, I use it as a daily driver. When I spin the tires by hand, what should I be looking for?

Look for the clunk, you should be able to locate it side to side this way.

I assume you have a good visual of the ujoints?

Could be a oblique break in the axle shaft which will allow both tires to spin but will tear out other parts if not repaired.
I would pull both axles out and check them

How would I go about pulling the shafts out? I'm 16 and haven't dealt a lot with axels, I've taken off the hubs all the way to the spring but never all the way ou. Anything helps, thanks

When mud boogging YOU AND YOUR CENTER PASSENGER NEEDS TO BE WEARING A SEAT BELT or at least a lap belt....So now you get to remove everything that attaches to the spindle and then the spindle itself has to come off to get to the axles.

You will need a 4 pin hub socket that is 1/2 drive and rentable from most auto stores or buy it for like $12.00.

That hub diagram if for a 8 lug D44, but you get the point on where to start.

I bet the 1/2 ton will have the inner locking hub mechanism like in the bottom pic.

This one time in my Dodge, this guy didn't put the seat belt on, even after I insisted. Hit some whoop-dee-doos and he bounced up and down and his butt landed right on the transfer case shifter! lol! right in the part you don't want stuff going into! Needless to say he put his belt on.

Lol, we were wearing seat belts don't worry. I've seen a few roll overs so I always make sure I wear a seat belt so in a case where we might roll over your heads not going through the roof lol. But lap belts only help so much when getting jerked forward but definitely keep you in your seat!

On my graduation night we had a friend not make it through some two tracks when we hit a tree, in a 78 F150 no less...

Anyway, 77&79F250 has given you a wealth of info, let us know what you find out!

THREAD HIGHJACK FOR SAFETY!

Buckle up or get out, my truck my rules. PERIOD I will not live with the fact you are paralyzed because I did not make you buckle up.

I do not want to be the one that lets my truck roll over your ejected body.

Seat belts are nice and 4 pt seat belts and a roll cage are even better.

You will notice that some of these trucks have the doors removed and loose a bit of structural support...

Also quick release buckles are awesome, rolling and living is nice, rolling and burning or drowning is BAD.

I've been thinking about picking up a set of those over the shoulder seat belts they have that are bolted into the cab from the pick n pulls. But I agree with you on the buckle up rule in your truck, especially since i haven't worked the suspension too much so you'll be getting tossed around driving down just a dirt road so wearing a seat belt makes the ride a little more enjoyable while also keeping you safe
