Assuming you synced your phone, it stands for messages received on your phone which can be displayed or played back on the radio. At least that is what it stands for on my radio.
I think the only way to remove it is to unsync the cellphone.

Like George said, it's an indicator that the phone it's paired to can do messages (texts).
Do a master reset: Perform Master Factory Reset on Ford SYNC | SYNC Help | Official Ford Owner Site
This will reset the system to factory defaults and remove any bluetooth phone/media-player pairing that's still in it.
It may, however, change some other settings that you might have gotten used to, so familiarize yourself with the system, check out all the settings, and then do the master reset.
On the other hand, if it has a working Sirius satellite radio account linked to the system, you might not want to do that master reset
