Here's the low down i have a 1979 f150 with a 300 inline six and a four speed transmission. I was wondering if i should keep this setup or ditch it for say a 351w with a c6. what should i do i would also like a pretty powerfull engine but i would like to get 15 or more miles to the gallon. it is a none 4x4. i am also about to paint it and i am going to have a dark silver color but which color should i use. i am also going to anodize the mirrors, bumbers, and the rims black
That question is really a toss up. The 300 is undoublty a hearty motor with a good amount of low end torque. The draw back is the 300 does not rev out at all - so overall quickness and speed is lousy. They can be built up - at considerable cost. The 351W will get about the same mileage (as long as you keep you foot out of it and stick with the stick). Mid and high range power is much better on a 351 even with a stock build. Again, the question is a toss up. If your itching to do something, then go with the 351W. If you like what you have, stick with it and spend the $$ on something else like a nice set of seats? I'm partial to the 300, I like the BIG six. You can't beat the years of service one will give.
A C6 from behind a 300-6, 302, or a 351W will bolt up. The shift points and clutches etc may be different. Try to get a C6 from behind another 351W. You can also get an AOD transmission with overdrive that will help your mileage. A C6 from behind a 351M/400, FE, or 429/460 will NOT bolt up.
power has a cost;fuel.the more power you have, the more fuel you burn.the bigger the engine, the fewer gas stations you pass,it's the nature of the beast.for economy, torque and longevity, you already have the proper combination.due up the bodyand make it shine, afterall,it will look just as good at 55mphas it would at a 100mph.but at 55 it will last a lot longer, and so won't you.besides, what's more impressive, being able to win a street light to street light race or being able to pull a house down in first gear at an idle?

This is true, however one thing that may not be entirely obvious is that finding a C6 with the small block bolt pattern you need is a very difficult task - Most C6 transmissions used the big block bolt pattern found on the FE, 439/460, and 351M/400 series motors. The automatic that was most common to find behind a small block was the C4. Maybe you should consider a rebuilt big block in front of a heavy transmission like that, or go with a 302 and a built C4.
For all-around trucking, I don't think a better combination exists than a 351-W/C-6. I had that combo in a Club Wagon, and it was hearty beast! It also had the 351-W HO setup with a Holley 4bbl and it could really move. I got about 14mpg, but I was one of these heavy "secondary" users.
But I can also vouch for the small-block C-4 combo, too. I was having problems with hauling and climbing with my 351-C/C-4 combo, but it turned out to be the carburetor. I replaced the carb, and now it has no problem hauling under heavy load and going up hills...I tested it (washer, dryer, garden tools, boxes, and everything else I could fit into an 8' bed). The C-4 also gives a noticeable miliage improvement.
