I recently bought a 2005 f150 fx4. With about 125000 on it. It started this noise coming from the passenger side. Does it while driving only. It sounds just like the casting noise on a fishing rod. Any idea on what this could be. Not sure which tire its comeing from. Maybe breaks? Doesn't change when breaks are applied though. Any ideas? Thanks!
Little more info. Goes away for a little then it almost like catches and starts the noise real loud. Goes away in 4x4 then stays away for a mile or two then back again!
i have a 2008 xlt 4x4 & have the same problem. The sound coming from the right front sounds like a brake squeal when pads are bad, but it only squeals when i'm on the throttle, take foot off & it stops. thought it's the heat shield, but it's solid. what could cause it??
I pretty much figured out the problem on mine I have an air leak somewhere with the 4wd system. See if your noise goes away in 4wd. Could have the same problem
OK, when i put 4 wheel drive on, noise disappears, when i disconnect & go back to 2 wheel, noise comes back, only when i have my foot on the throttle, take my foot of the gas & it stops. Any help on why???
The 4wd actuator on these trucks is run by vacuum, and quite often the rubber boot on the actuator wears out, full vacuum is no longer applied, and the splines drag, creating a "card in the spokes of your bike" noise. Trucks before 06 have a 4wd solenoid located far passenger corner of the firewall, and it does NOT have a hood protecting it as the later models do, and this hood prevents water from leaking through the wiper cowl and inside of the solenoid. If there is water in the system, the actuator can not fully compress. if your solenoid does not have this hood, take off the actuator and squeeze it, if water comes out, that is your problem. if not, hook the vacuum hos to it and turn on your truck, if it does not compress fully, then the actuator is bad.

The reason the noise comes and goes like you describe is that the vacuum decreases as you open the throttle and increases as you let off the gas. If you have a small leak or weak actuator this difference in vacuum will make the noise come and go.

That's all correct except the one way check valves are supposed to stop the vacuum from bleeding off when on the gas. Replace the 2 vacuum check valves and updated solenoid Cx2117
