Hello this is my first post in this section of FTE. I am looking for a daily driver so i can start restoring my 1993 f150. I found a 2003 ford ranger with the 3.0l v6 and 5 speed transmission it is 2wd. Real nice condition since i'm from New York and we use salt. The truck has 172000 on it. Regular cab short bed
Problems:
CEL - misfire on cylinder 5? it looks like the guy cleared the codes before I got there because the CEL came on when I was test driving it. (he had his scanner in the truck when i got there)
Tranny - the guy thinks it needs a transmission but my buddy says it doesn't because he believes standard transmissions do not go bad. When you try to shift into second it grinds until the syncros line up and 5th gear whines. I'm not sure who to believe so i'd love your input on this. MY friend believes this could be a slave cylinder problem because the clutch had a lot of plat and really loose.
The guy is only asking 1800 but the transmission problem and CEL was not specified in the ad so i will most likely talk him down and he has lowered his price already by 600 dollars. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks.

Reason: Attention...
It can be hard to say "pass" when you're heart's set on a new vehicle but I would on this one. It's not that $1,800 is a bad price, but with what you're telling us it sounds like the seller has been dishonest. That's always a deal breaker for me. Who knows what other problems you would find after spending some time with it. Manual transmissions can go bad like anything else, albeit it is rare. I just had mine rebuilt at 190K and the bearings were shot. whining is usually a sign of a bad bearing. For the price point you're looking at you should be able to find something road ready.
I agree with Josh. A trans rebuild will run close to $900 and the whine is a good indication that there is something internal. A clutch system with slave and master (I recommend both at rebuild, based on personal experience) will be close to $300 with you doing the work. As to the CEL it could be an ignition or injector issue.
The grinding of trans indicates bad master, bad slave (both) or just a bad clutch. Look for a 4.0 if you need to haul anything.
Just saw this in another post. Most are fairly clsoe to you I would think?
