You need to ask around your neighborhood, who is a pipefitter(like me) and ask him for a 48" pipe wrench.... ....I always oil the gasket, spin it on till it touchs the base, then tighten up to (1) turn.
Oil gasket, spin on until gasket contacts base, then another 3/4 turn. I place a piece of masking tape on the bottom of my filters, to be able to judge a 3/4 turn accurately.
I haven't seen them all, but the filters I have seen all have the instructions printed right on the can or at least the box. If at first you don't succeed, read the freaking directions.
In general, oil the gasket. Clean the threads and mounting plate on the engine. Then turn the filter to just where you feel the gasket contact it and then turn the amount as printed on the can, usually 1/2 to 1 full turn. Do not turn it as tight as you can. If you are King Kong, you may never get it back off. Just turn the amount printed on the can or box.
Wouldn't hurt to inspect the filter before using it. Make sure the gasket is not damaged, check for rusty threads. Look inside to make sure there is no junk. I used to inspect filters as a part time job when I was in high school, you would be surprised at the number of filters we would reject for rust or damage. Don't assume the filter is fine just becuase it is new. It takes just a few seconds to look it over.
Jim,you are correct. But,I open the box right there in the store to inspect the filter. That way if there is a problem, put that one aside or give it to the clerk and get another one.

I didn't know about this extra 1 turn thing, but I get it tight - hand-tight. Do not use any tools while putting it on!! You should not have to use tools taking it off.

That's the first I've ever heard of that and I think Ford would disagree. If you don't get it tight enough it will leak. That's why they make oil filter wrenches.
