I guess where I'm going is - could you find a two-speed diff with a tone ring on the ring gear?

VSS is non-contact, so yeah, pretty sure it's magnetic / Hall effect.

I think he has his axle picked out already.

I'm not sure if I could or not, that would be great. It would have to go in place of the existing Eaton 17121 diff. I do not want to change the 23,000# GVWR.

When you finish this project, you'll have to bring it out to RRE!

Are the computers locked or coded to a certain VIN on these?

No; there's no VIN information that comes up when you connect the truck to AE.

Even if there were, what would it be "locked" to? Someone connecting and reading codes/data would see the VIN of the donor, and yes, it wouldn't match the VIN on the vehicle's dash, but that certainly wouldn't affect how it runs.

I think he was concerned about putting components together and making sure they would work. Alot of the new stuff is that way where everything has to match VIN wise.

Exactly! Converting to a computerized drive train goes against everything in me, but I want this truck to be reliable and parts available when it is done.

I don't want to get it put together and have the computer laugh at me when I turn the key.

But in our case, there's only one "component" - the PCM. What would have to "match"? That's the beauty of the OBS PSD; for a partly digitally-run powertrain, it's about as simple as they come.

You could have two tone rings and two VSS. Then switch between the two sensors electronically, tie into the switch for the axle and your good to go!
