I am cobbling together an old '85 Ford E-150. The engine is a 351 Windsor 4 BBL. Can anyone tell me where the ignition coil is suppose to be mounted on this engine?
The whole top of the intake manifold is covered in a mass of vacuum lines, various diaphragms and vacuum switches. I'm just not seeing anywhere convenient to mount the ignition coil...
I don't know specifically about what you have but it does not have to be mounted on the intake.
Do you have room on the firewall? My 65 Ranchero had it on the firewall as did the Pintos I used to race. Same as all the race cars I've built.

There doesn't seem to be much room anywhere. The E-150 doesn't really have a firewall. I'm guessing that the coil was originally mounted somewhere near the front on the intake manifold. I'd like to put it back in the same place if someone with a similar van could tell me where that is...
That's a tricky one, NAPA listed two different ones, one Square and the other is the old Cylinder style. So I went surfing through Google Images for engines of that era and found most were mounted on a Bracket over the Drivers side Valve Cover towards the front.......

Hey PintoGuy,
On my stock 78 E250 351W, this is where the cylindrical style coil was originally mounted: Looking at the front of the engine with the hood open- passenger side about 3/4" away from and parallel to the valve cover via a clamp that bolts to the front top of the intake manifold. The coil is mounted on it's side with all electrical connections facing forward. The front edge of the coil is just about where the back of the distributor cap ends, so if you could imagine a line from the back of the distributor going from left to right you're in the ballpark. There should be a threaded bolt hole in that vicinity on the intake manifold. Hope that helps. This mounting position is exactly the same on my 302 roller engine which replaced the 351.

so this one is correct then , tough to see the whole coil as it is painted to match the VC.

Yes, that helps! Thanks guys for all the replies and the cool pics. You told me what I was wanting to know. It is most appreciated.
Without that information, I was just about to mount the coil under the driver's seat...
The issue has been resolved. Rummaging through my pile of old Ford van parts, I found the original ignition coil. On an 1985 5.8 litre Econoline 150 (with air), the factory ignition coil mounting point is on the back side of the upper accessory mount plate/bracket just behind the adjustable idler pulley.
I had mentioned earlier that there didn't seem to be any room to mount the ignition coil anywhere on the top of the intake manifold due to the clutter of vacuum lines with the various dash-pots, diaphragms and vacuum switches. Apparently that is indeed the case...
