Cant seem to locate the correct part here, i have an 86 f250 xlt lariat super cab with the 460. Im trying to find the fuel sending unit for the front tank. This particular truck has a mechanical fuel pump mounted to the engine with a supply and a return line. Therefore i need the sending unit that has an inlet and outlet port on top with a 2 wire connector. If someone can give me a part number and who carries this please help.

Man I wish I had a mechanical pump. anyways, the sending unit is here, looks to be not available from oreillys (even though they have it listed) but it shows the specs (midship tank)
Seems LMC is about the only place to get it. All the parts stores and even Rock Auto just list the EFI sending unit like the one shown above. Appears it's the same as used on the carb'ed 85-86 F250 351 which also doesn't show up most places.
on oriellys site they state this is only fits 12 applications (all gassers not EFI)
The one pictured is for a model with pump mounted on the sending unit, like LMC part 43-4084. I don't know if the carb setup uses two different delivery systems or not (apparently it does) but that sending unit is set up like an EFI pump.....pump on sending unit and four pin connector for sending and pump power. If you were to mount it in the tank as is it wouldn't pick up gas once the tank was down to a quarter full or so, and the screen included is for attachment to a pump. The OP said he's got a block mounted pump and two wire connector. I just called it an EFI unit because it's set up like the early EFI models (85, 86, etc.) that use a lp pump in the tank and hp pump on the frame.
It's kinda the same issue with the '85 302 with carb.....LMC is the only place that makes one for it. That uses a different two pin electrical connector than earlier models and uses EFI-style fuel line quick connect, plus it has a bigger hole in the tank (same as the EFI models). If you go to the part store and ask for an '85 302 sending unit, they'll give you one similar to that other one which won't work either and Spectra doesn't make one.
Parts stores can be a pain with all the changeover stuff, but they just pretty much list stuff as the suppliers list it.
there is no pump on that one, only the sending unit, albeit it appears that the bracket for the pump is there, however no pump. The one I replaced on my 83 has the pump and sending unit on it, and was about a 100 bucks more than that one
I guess they must not make a replacement pump for the '85-'86 or something. Yours is a different model altogether. LMC shows two different units for '83-'84, and two different units for '85-'86. The block mounted pump style like he's looking for will have a two pin connector that uses a two socket small oval "squeeze tab" plug (about half the size of the four pin plug), and the pickup tube will be longer with screen mounted on the end.
**Just checked LMC and it says the in tank pump for those that use it is the same for '83-'86 and is $120. I don't know why they only seem to sell the '85-'86 electric pump sending unit non-assembled though. They do for yours and it's up to $220 now. Yee-ow.
Loveless, as you can probably note by now, yours is a bit of a rare setup only used for a couple of years, If you could I would drop the tank, pull the unit and pull some numbers of it, but of course, before any of that I would pull the connector to the gauge and ground it, it should peg to full IIRC, to ensure your not replacing the wrong part That would suck
so after looking at this ad and pic, it looks like it includes the wires for the pump that I assume you can buy separately, so I guess you just leave those off, leaving you 2 pins to connect to, sending unit and a ground????????
Just click on the first LMC link above. It won't have a pic of the unit, but does have one of the type plug it uses. His plug won't even hook up to four pin electric pump unit. Like mentioned earlier, if you put that sending unit in it, it will be a few inches short of reaching the bottom of the tank. The pump mounts to the pick up tube, then the end of the pump sits at the bottom of the tank picks up fuel. The mechanical pump model will reach to the bottom of the tank with the pick up tube.
LMC specifically sells a unit for '86 460 with mechanical pump like he needs and not only that it's $10 cheaper than trying to make the wrong one work. I don't see what the issue is. Just like the '85 with 302 and carb....there is one and only one sending unit that works for it out of the box and LMC is or was the only place to get it (unless Ford still makes one for a thousand bucks).
LMC seems to be the only way to go, my book says 434048, for models w mech fuel pump and has two fuel ports. The link above shows diff numbers but the same info, maybe i have an old book/number. Gonna call lmc n get someone to get part in hand n describe it to me....hopefully.
I'm following this, since I have much the same issue.
Except my truck is a one year wonder.
The new dash gauge for 1987 reads backwards from the '80-'86 models.
LMC has the correct pickup for your midship tank.
Why not snap it up?
