Ok...my truck makes a wierd noise and i'm wondering if anyone else has had the same one. When in reverse and moving backward, like backing out of a parking stall, i hit the breaks and my truck makes a wierd pop,,,its quite loud. As soon as i hit the brakes going forward it does it again and then won't do it again till i back up again. I can't find anything loose so i'm at a loss.

what kinda truck? how is it configured?

Could be the rear brake shoes rolling forward or back when you apply the brakes. Check their adjustment....as well as all the hardware associated with the rear brakes and shoes. Bendix self adjusting brakes (drum style) frequently go wacko and can make all kind of noise when the cables break or the system is not adjusted properly.

Good luck.

Check your transmission/engine mounts. A common occurance for the 88-96 fords is for the transmission bolts to work themselves loose from the crossmember. Causing a Pop or Clunk when hitting the brakes or accelerating!!!

My '93 F150 ext cab does the samething. Mine does it when backing out of my driveway turning the wheels. Sounds like its something binding, then letting go & poping maybe steering related.

Thats exactly what mine does. It does it when turning and backing. If anyone can figure it out let me know. I'm fairly sure its not my brakes, they're completly new.

There were a number of posts a while back that discussed the odd tendency of the front wheels to lean inward at the tops (can't remember if that's excessive camber or caster?) on Ford trucks when backing them up. Some considered this to be a sign of worn ball joints while others theorized that it had to do with the weight transfer that occurs when backing up (additional weight being placed on the front suspension). I wonder if this isn't related. Could it be ball joint play, or tie rod ends? I wonder if there's a common element to your problem, for example, do you all have a few miles on your suspension components? When was the last time the front end was greased?

Ok,,,first one. New ball joints 6000 miles ago. Those were my first thoughts. Greased twenty miles ago. All the front end parts are new. Second one. I checked the brake calipers and the brackets in which the bolt. All is good.

I have a 92 F-150 4x4 and have been chasing after this problem for some time. I put new ball joints in, coil springs, shocks, tie rod ends, drag link and I'm fixin to change out the pivot bushings. it's just one of them noises that drives me crazy. Ball all over the truck and found no loose mounts either. If you ever resolve your noise I would appreciate it if you could le tme know how you resolved it, thanks

Let me know how the new pivot bushings work. That was going to be my next attempt too. But if it doesn't fix it for you i probably won't.

Did you ever find out what the problem was? My 90 Bronco is starting to do the same thing while in reverse.
