A year or so ago I would agree with you all the way. Every car show I go to and see a beautiful ford F1 sitting there and look under the hood and find a small block chevy in it I just walk away. I hated it. Yet today when you go buy a new car you get mazdas in fords or some other set up. Everything today is a global platform and parts are mixed and matched from most every company. I did a Jag transmission the other day and it is the same one that comes in an explorer.
Now it has become acceptable to put a cummins in an old ford truck! Why are they not putting 7.3s in these trucks? Because its easy to do and get good power out of the the cummins. So why not put a jap motor in a ford.
Its just an idea and I have not seen it done.
Whether it jap, china, Chevy , or a damn dodge. I believe they will eternally rest in the sane place for ruining a perfectly good old Ford.
But why don't we see 7.3s put in!? Great question.
But as for your project, that sounds like you have a lot of work cut out for you. That's a downfall to completely custom hotrodding, there no one to ask questions to or anything to go by. I wouldn't want to deal with the wiring and computer issues, that's why I have an old truck and not a new one,I can work on this with tools and without a laptop. As hard as it will be. The mounts and mechanical aspects of driveshaft, shifting mech, and other will probly be the easiest part.
Good question is how are you going to feel about yourself when you pull up to the light and you can't tell the difference between your antique Ford truck and the annoying bumblebee buzz of a 16 yr old pizza boys fart tip on his Honda civic next to you? Just food for thought
Redneck davis LOL nice but remember it is still a V8. Not a little 4 banger. Pull up next to a nissan titan that has a set of duals on it and tell me if it does not sound good. I have a buddy with one and it sounds a little like an old flat head. Well not quite but it does have a great sound. But I do get where your coming from. The truth is I love my truck. To keep the same truck for 20+ years I must love it. I also love the old FE. The sound it makes is great. The rush of TQ is fantastic. I have never drove a gas powered car-truck with more TQ then my truck "Being a trans builder and shop owner I drive 5-10 cars a day". Drove lots with more HP and lots of diesels with more TQ. I have also run my truck against miatas on autocross courses and did pretty well. The "Fat *******" gets around corners pretty well since i put sway bars front and back and lowered it. One of the benes of putting this nissan motor in it is weight. The 390 is very heavy where the nissan is all aluminum. This is probably a pipe dream and I will most likely just keep FE. I would like to Fuel Inj it for reliability. When I put the doug nash in it I thought it was an underdrive/overdrive like a gear venders. When i found out it was an underdrive/straight drive this is when I went looking for a lower gear. Before that I had a 3.0:1 and running down the highway at 65 I was turning 2800 rpms. Now with the 2.5:1 I turn about 2300. Having the underdrive is really nice. If I am running around town I run in low range. Then shift up when I get on the highway. Being in the transmission business I have always wanted OD but the only trans options for the FE is C6 or FMX. At one point I was looking for and adaptor plate to put in an AOD. But then I came across the doug nash. I am not a fan of the way AODs shift but at least its OD.
Get yourself a gearvendors overdrive. The 390 in my highboy gets 14 mpg highway if I drive politely. Thats with stock 4.10 gears, C6, dialed in 4bbl, and 34" tires. The overdrive setup is around $3k new and probably $2k used, add another $200 to have your driveline shortened and... voila, a three-speed suddenly has 6 forward gears and a 20% increase in mileage. If you really want to get crazy, you could do what I'd planned to do and put it between the trans and the xfer case for 12 forward gears (high/low range). when it's engaged it makes the equivalent of having a 3.22 rear end, and when disengaged you still have the 4.10's. Dealing with the incompetent gearvendors staff is about as pleasing as chewing broken glass. But when it's all said and done, problem solved.
