94 2wd ranger 5sp 2.3. if i wanted to put lower rear gears in my ranger what would i need to do? would some gears out of a 90-92 4wd ranger work. am i correct in thinking they are lower?
Not necessarily. First you need to identify for us what you have in there now. Get axle codes from diff cover. Then decide what you want to go back with. Then maybe we can help.
If you want to swap gears, you pull the diff. After you set the new ring and pinion on you have to set your bearing endplay, then backlash, and last you will have to make sure you have a good contact pattern. You will need a dial indicator.
i have a 1991 Ford 4X4 F-250 with the 351 and a 5 speed overdrive tranny. i have the 4.10 gearing and thought about going with the 3.73 for the gas milage, but how much power will i lose since i use the truck for hauling once in awhile?
It's the equivilant to 15 or so hp. If you've never done an axle before, don't even try it. It's very tricky and complicated. You need to watch someone do it before you can do it yourself.

Just out of curiosity, how does one come up with a number like that? I can understand that a higher gear ratio would adversely affect your ET's as the time it takes to get into the powerband increases, and it would obviously effect your ability to get a heavy load moving from a dead stop.....but you're not really LOSING any hp. The engine still generates the same amount of power regardless of the gears.
Your more or less loosing torque not horse power when going up in gears. Higher gears, HP might actually increase because the pinion gear is bigger then increasing efficiency of the rear end.

would it be easier to install the axles shocks springs brakes and everything from the other truck? or will the years make any difference? how complicated would it be? in theory i would not have to add anything else to the axle right?

If you have the facilities - yes - that's what I would do.
