Advice needed. Is the 351 in a 96 Ford F250 ext.cab 4x4 with an auto tranny sufficient for hauling a 9.5 foot overhead camper on a daily basis or should I go for the 460 engine? I am worried that the 351 may be a little weak and stressed but I like the price of the truck I am looking at. Any input? Thanks
I have a friend who hauls a 91/2 foot camper and a boat behind his 89 f-250 with a 351 and he seems to have no problems. the 460 would definatly have more power but the 351 should do fine.
Also keep in mind that if your towing is normally above 5000 feet, especially around 8 or 9000 feet like it is in Colorado, the 351 will be a bit underpowered. But if you tow at lower elevations, you should have no problem.
The 351 is a very good engine. I agree that if, and only if you have steep elevations, the 351 should do the job with no problem. It is nice to have a heavier engine just to have that margine for extra power but the 351 V8 never let me down. Jake.
Sounds like the 351 is not much on mileage. If the 460 is anything like the 454 I use to have, I would get the same 10 mpg loaded or empty. What is the typical mpg of the 351?
