Define "Modular"

The dictionary defines it as a module composed of standardized units or sections. What is this in reference to the 5.4 and 4.6?

It is the way that the cylinders are made into the block. I think that they are actually inserted after the block is cast.( At least the new GM LT1's are made this way.)

BlueOvalFitter-
The dictionary is correct in Ford's approach. Ford has compartmentalized each cylinder so you can hack the block between cylinders or add to the block design prior to casting and have all the water jackets and oil passages in the adjoining cylinders line right up if you scramble the cylinders on the same side (theoretically anyway).

From what I understand the 6.8L V-10 is supposed to be a 5.4 with two more cylinders... So if we cut 1/4 off a 5.4 and the end of a 6.8 will they join together? cool!!! a 14 cylinder monster....Only if they are a true modular.

Just thought I'd throw that in....I'm curoius to know.
