Towing modication advice

This may be considered long, but please stay with me .

I bought the truck about 18 months ago and it's sole purpose was to tow our 32' Puma travel trailer.

The truck is a 2007 F350 XLT diesel which immediately underwent surgery for head gaskets, studs, and the regular associated maintenance.

Since the motor work, the truck has pulled fairly well but the oil and coolant temps still climb pretty high when doing our yearly trips to Radium, BC from Calgary, AB. Anyone who knows the area can attest to the MAJOR grades encountered along that route (specifically HWY 93). The temps stay within 10-15 degrees of each other but can easily push 220 when climbing and the fan is almost on constantly. I know that this route we take is about as harsh as they come as far as climbing hills and having to descend back down, but I'm hoping there may be more I can do to help the truck along.

Along with the motor upgrades, I have an Edge tuner which I put in the 'Tow' tune when pulling (along with being able to monitor vitals), a straight pipe exhaust, and rear air bags with an onboard compressor. The trailer weighs in at 8200lbs dry and is probably right around 10k when we travel. Oh, and the truck has 3.73 gears...would a gear change help/hinder in any way?

So my question(s) is this...what further upgrades/mods should I look into to make towing as effortless as possible. The truck is very loud when we tow due to the exhaust, would putting a 'sport' muffler of some kind on there noticeably effect towing power?

Any input or advice is greatly appreciated ! And like I said, the truck pulls pretty good for the size of the trailer...but obviously any help it can get would be even better!

Sorry, just realized this is in the wrong forum as it is not a toy hauler.

Mods - please move to the 'convential' towing forum, thanks!

Smarty, Good looking truck and trailer. Join us over in the Alberta chapter some time. and it never hurts to put your location into the profile so folks can give you more specific answers.

If you want quieter exhaust, I'd look into something that mimics the stock setup as close as possible. I find most of the aftermarket stuff is louder without being any better.

6.0's have a very good trans cooling system, never had an issue with mine. I would personally pull the radiator and intercooler and verify that they are clean. I purchased an 05 about a year ago it had more mud and grass stuck between the radiator and intercooler than I have ever seen.

When you had the studs done, did you have the EGR deleted and the oil cooler done? What are your deltas when not towing? Since my delete, I only have about a 3-4 degree difference when unloaded.

The EGR was already deleted, and yes, I had the cooler done at the same time. I generally see ~5 degree difference when unloaded...and not much more than that loaded but the temps are obviously higher.

Maybe they used a dorman oil cooler vs Ford OEM? I think they run hotter and tend to not last very long.. hope they used Ford!!

I installed a A-1 Cardone oil cooler in mine against all the advice provided here. It's working well, deltas are in with a 7 degree spread.
