Got a DEF Fault / speed limited to 50MPH in 50 miles warning 7 weeks ago; DEF level was fine. I was scheduled for the reflash so the diesel mechanic thought the update may fix it; it did. For 3 weeks. Then I got it again; diesel tech replaced a NOX sensor 3 weeks ago. Last night my CIL came on (no other message) for about 5 miles and then a DEF System Fault Speed Limited to 50mph Upon Restart. Sure enough it's limited to 50mph. Not happy--this is the third day of Leave (I'm military) I've had to take for repairs o this truck. It's a 2013 with 20,992.6 miles. Any thoughts???

 

I think they need to investigate further than a computer flash.

 

I would assume so--the first fault occurred before the recall flash

UPDATE:
Dealer in Anchorage reports that they think there's contamination in the DEF tank and therefore it's not warranty-covered and it'll be, oh... about $3k to repair. Their reputation is horrible and an acquaintance relayed he had the exact experience with the dealer 2 weeks ago. He paid to have his truck towed to a dealer 40 miles away who found the real cause and repaired the truck under warranty. So I'm having my truck towed to the other dealer tomorrow morning.

 

If there truly is contamination then an insurance claim can help cover some of the cause.


I doubt that to be the issue.

If you are coming up with contaiminated DEF then drain it out and put some fresh stuff in and drive it about 20-30 miles and it may clear itself.

 

Sorry to hear about your truck. The dealer wound up replacing the entire catalyst. Problem solved.

These are the defects that I remember from memory. This is my Father's truck who is 83yo, he bought new in 2013 and is his only ride.


2013 F-250SD Crew 4X4, 14,900ish miles at present.


1st, Coolant leak @approx. 10,000 miles (Dec 20th 2014) dealer said no issues coolant full and NO LEAK...??? Every time I drove coolant reservoir empty, but when @ dealers it would show full (Expansion).
Finally week before Xmas vacation dropped at dealers for 10day (Appx) and they replaced water pump...


2nd problem (Middle to late May? ). approx. 100-150 mi ago, 55mph limited for 1 day, drove approx. 10-20mi driven and said engine Idled soon, went to dealers DIRECTLY and didn't get stranded on roadside (Luckily close enough to dealership)
Nothing (Parts) changed at dealers so I expect they went with code clear or ???


3rd issue/ (Saturday B4 Mothers Day) Speed limited to 55mphwhich lasted for approx. 15mi than straight to idle, left me high N dry on roadside! Within 3miles of dealer so limped to dealership @ 2MPH
NOX sensor changed.
Dealer had for 7-10days.


4th time July 12th appx/ Speed limited to 55mph/"IDLE Soon Message " directly after within 5 mins, lasted for the 5 miles to get home BUT upon next start up, Idle mode, towed to dealership.


Returned appx week later 19th?


Next Day (20th?) IDLE Mode
Towed to dealer, replaced Cat, picked up Wed 7/29


7/30 Not driven today.


7/31 Driven 20 miles, Check engine light on goin to dealer TODAY!!!
