Close call tonight guys.. Do not run mini spools!!
Me and Chewy(my min pin) were making a late night trash run when all hell broke loose.. Sparks flew like an explosion and my tire/axle inflicted a little damage on my pickup as it proceeded to pass me.. I had my 2 year old in it with me yesterday so I thank God he wasn't in it with me tonight..
Don't run a spool on the street guys, this could have been bad if it were busy or I had it wound up
You know, I honestly don't know where it went array.. The entire axle come out of the housing. When I put the spool in last year I put new bearings and seals in it as well.. Ill get a picture of how it peeled out of the flange plate.. The bearing stayed in the housing behind the plate and is in pieces but not pulverized. It was full of fluid because it was bleeding out..

Thank you.. The axle slapped the cab corner pretty good and caved the door in but luckily that popped out..

Thank you.. I'm going to slide it back out tomorrow and get a good look at things.. Iv seen them break off but I haven't seen one peel out like a Chevrolet, especially with no warning
Looks like the bearing retainer wasn't on there very well. That's all that holds the axle and wheel in on a 9". Running a spool may have contributed but it looks like lateral forces caused that failure.
Running a spool or "mini" spool on the street is wrong period. It puts a LOT of STRESS on the bearing's and axle's, thats why it say's "not for street use". I wondered why the manufacturers put that on there. Just glad no one was hurt.
Ouch! That sucks, but glad nobody was hurt, definitely could've been worse.
I've seen this happen to a few guys on the forum now and it scared me enough to redo all the bearings and such in the 9" in my 79. I had nightmares of taking a turn in it and having an axle slide out.
I bought my truck with a spool in the rear end and wondered whether or not it was safe to run on the street. I don't daily drive mine but all the same it looks like I should really consider swapping it out. One more thing to the list.
my buddy is about to put one in a GM 12 bolt on his C10, according to his dad you can run spools on the street you just have to turn wide, though i should go the spool rout but thinking a locker may be a better idea.... and just to be a butt that truck is a 60's truck and this is the dentside page( not that i really care just wanted to be that guy)
glad you and your dog are ok. no injuries? and real glad your son was not in there that could freak him out.

Reason: miss spelled something.

I'm at a loss.. the axles were "like new" used when I put them in with the spool and bearings as you can see with the white paint.. We cut the old bearings off and hammered the new ones on so there wasn't necessarily a tolerance issue with the bearing so I figured there wouldn't be an issue with the flange coming off.. You are correct though, I largely blame the bearing because there wasn't any damage on the spline/pumpkin side of the axle but I blame it for a premature failure.. I did briefly run this setup with 37's..
DEFINATELY not chancing it again after this

Well ya know what its like when a woman says no...... Damn if I don't try anyways
Jokes aside it was foolish and not worth the safety of my family because I knew better..
I will gladly be the poster boy for the spool debate because I was lucky enough to not get hurt or hurt someone else for a bad decision

Hope it goes smoothly putting it back together.
Its definitely the kind of mishap stories are made of..
I had hoped to dodge the bullet by temporarily running the spool until I got it fixed but it turned into THE fix.. Ill be putting the correct amount of money into the next 9"
The axle hung on the end of the housing and mauled it before it rolled all the way out so the "new" one will be a rebuild and swap job.. at least ill get to clean it up and get some paint on before it goes under.
Thank you

An open 31 spline used differential runs 70 bucks all day on eBay.. Realistically my spool decision was made because it was cheap.. risking my families and others lives was ridiculous.. Change that thing out!! A 9" is super easy to work on

The spool has been in for a little over a year.. The 37's I ran probably ate the bearing alive

The spool definitely effects the truck at highway speeds in slight turns and makes backing the truck a pain in the a$$.. It negatively effects the truck in ALL ways..
You arent that guy because I put the 66 body on a 78 frame a few years back..
