My nephew just graduated high school and his parents bought him an F150 similar to mine. His is an 08 F150 XL, 5 speed, with 109K miles. I admit that it's in great shape. It just needs a few minor mechanical repairs, such as the brakes.
Here is where we get into a p*****g contest on what he should use as brake pads. I suggested semi metallic Wagner Thermo-Quiets all around, but his dad is gung ho on using Duralast Gold ceramic.
The rotors are in such great shape that I suggested just roughing them up with some emory cloth and install the pads. At least he agree's with me on that.
Any suggestions on how to convince him he only needs semi metallic pads instead of ceramic pads or am I missing something here? He will only be driving it to school (LSU-23 miles one way) and on weekends when he needs to go to the store or a friends house.
Ceramic pads will destroy the rotors in no time flat, Yes they will last forever, but they are noisy, especially when they get hot, and hot they get, thats why they warp the rotors and you have brake pedal fade, you can actually boil the brake fluid in the caliper, causing loss of pedal. I stay away from ceramics at all cost, I would love to go back to organic, nothing stopped better, stayed cooler, didn't last long but you never heard a peep from them, I wish the 80's were back. Semi metalic are fine, I run them on my truck front and rear, and ocassional squeek when dirt gets between the pad but other than that, they dont rip apart your rotors, they stop much better, and the pedal feel is much better, They should take those ceramics and throw them off a bridge, cause they never go on any thing I put brakes on, And I manage a fleet of trucks. I dont know where he got the idea of ceramic pads anyone that knows stay's away.
Veering away from the main question I'd simply suggest letting this young man use whatever he prefers-----lessons learned the hard way tend to be the most long lived.
While we all want to help the younger set avoid our same mistakes or benefit from our knowledge more often than not they ignore voices of experience. Assuming vehicle repair costs is all on him this could be one of those teachable moments.
Other than than I have great experience with NAPA Ultra Premium pads---a bit more than stock spec'd pads but well worth it. Plenty of stopping power, easy on the rotors----perfect combo IMHO.
