I had the same issue with the broken clip (at about 95k) and the transmission shop told me that this tranny is better than the newer ones.
MPG went down so I am in the process of replacing plugs (106k). The first four I replaced amazes me that they were even firing. Four more to go.

I had the transmission overhauled at 150k miles (330k miles ago). According to the OH shop, it had a broken clip that kept it from going into OD. I check the transmission fluid level every now and then but have done nothing to it.
Do you ever haul anything and do u live on flat land or mountains/hills? And by mountains I mean 7k ft or heigher.

Mostly flatland highway driving, rarely above 3000 ft msl. I probably tow some thing once or twice a year. Its basically been a passenger truck with small ladders and stuff in the bed.

Dont replace it. (unless it keeps dieing on you) I say ride that wagon till the wheels fall off. You probably have the most miles ever put on an original 5.4 and e40d.

Its the tranny in your truck. Unless you have a 2wd then its a 4R100? I may be wrong on the 2wd tranny.

These trucks didn't have those transmissions. His has the 4R75W. E4OD was discontinued in the 90s I believe and the 4R100 is only found in '99-'03 Super-Duty trucks, if my memory serves me correctly.

Gotcha. I must have takin the words. "You have an updated E40D in your truck" a little too literal. Lol the guy didnt give me a tranny name I just figured it was a much more electronic based E40D tranny. Thanks for that info sir.
