Got a 93 F-150 and I'm looking for a hand held code reader. What should I be looking for? What do other folks use? I've seen little hand held jobs going for about $30, is that all I need? Don't really know a lot about these things so I would like to get some opinions.
The "cheap" readers are just a light in a box with wires and a fancy label. I just used a circuit tester and followed the proceedure in the web site that I will attach. Good luck.

I did see an a car show on TV recently a real good reader but it was major bucks though, some where around 500 but you can get different interfaces for different types and brands of vehicles. Way outa my league tho.
As stevieray said, you can do it with just a jumper and a test light. I bought the Actron CP9015 reader for a few reasons. First it is slightly more convienient and quicker to just plug it in and go. The other thing is that it comes with a pretty decent book with the codes and some descriptions. It also has a beeper so you don't have to stare at the light. It also lets you clear codes (jumper can too). I paid about $30 for it and am happy with it.
