Thinking about a new 2015

I have had many Ford trucks, gas and diesel. My diesel experienced was soured by owning a 6.0 and since then I've had two 6.8 V10's. Never had any trouble with the gas trucks, reliable as the family car.
My present truck is a 2010 F350 V10 4x4. I bought it new and it only has about 16 thousand miles. I only use it for pulling in the summer so it sits all winter.
Although the warranty will be up this year, I'm not afraid in the least to own it out of warranty.
I'd like a new truck but the 6.2 gas motor doesn't interest me and the 2015 6.7 really does. I've read about the early 6.7 dropping valves and some other problems. I'm thinking this late in the run the big problems should be sorted.
Anyone here planning on owning a 6.7 out of warranty?

I plan on it but I always pay for the extended warranty to get me out to 200,000 miles. I took my last truck to 245,000 and I really like my current one so I think I'll keep this one.

I think you'll be okay, reading these forums, your naturally going to see more "problems" posted than anything else. The 6.7L is an outstanding power plant, yes there are issues as with everything else in this world. If you're concerned do as Joel suggests, purchase and extended warranty. I promise you, once you drive it, you'll be sold. Not taking anything away from the gas burners, but the Powerstroke is amazing!
On edit: mine is out of warranty now, self induced, but oh well....I'll drive till the wheels fall off!

At only app. 3,000 miles per year and all seasonal, I would keep your gasser. The diesels, and I don't care which one, need to be worked and driven regularly. Your choice but you don't do enough miles to justify the cost or maint. of a diesel.

I know. This is a dilemma.
I have driven the 6.2 but I prefer the feel of the 6.8. The problem is the 6.8 is no longer offered in anything lighter than the F450.
If Ford built an F250 or F350 with the 6.8 I would be shopping that. My truck is far from worn out, I just feel like getting a new one.

Also, the ESP caps at 7 years now. so you can't just tool on to 200K worry free. I had the 6.2, and it did fine, but left me wanting more when towing.

I'm like you in that I don't put a lot of miles on mine, so I turned down the ESP. A lot of money for only two extra years, and my Insurance gives me 100,000 miles of mechanical breakdown coverage so I figured I was fine. When we retire and buy a fifth wheel to replace our travel trailer I'm sure it will get a lot more miles. Only 600 miles on it now and I'm lovin it!

Do I plan on keeping it after the warranty? Absolutely. Why not? If after 10 years and 100k miles and it's still working as it should, I'll keep on truckin! Could it have problems in the mean time that cause me to change my mind? Sure, but I thought this through before I pulled the trigger. Most importantly, I discussed the 6.7 trucks with the owners I know personally (probably ten or so, including my BIL who has a job1 dually). A small sampling I know, but re-assuring to me none the less, as virtually none of them has had a major issue. I also have a co-worker whose son is a diesel tech at a Ford dealer. I asked him specifically about the HPFP issue. He said since the 6.7 came out, they've only had one come in for the pump grenading, and they covered it. So it does happen.

Finally, to beat a dead horse; those who come to the internet with problems are a very small sampling of the many owners out there who are driving blissfully along for years with no trouble. Are their problems real? Of course. Do we want to hear about them and help/support if we can? Of course. But it wasn't enough to send me to another brand. Fords have been too good to me for that, and if I thought I would be driving around on pins and needles just waiting for a catastrophe well....I would have stuck with gas.

So OP, If you have the resources to spend on what a new one cost, I say go for it. They are for sure complex rigs now a days, but when they work like they should....

Ok, thanks for confirming the time limit for the new esp warranty. 7 years for you guys is easily an issue that negates the decision to go for the extra coverage.

But I will state again, for the 2011 truck that I had the extended factory warranty was responsible for over $30,000 in repairs from the 100,000-200,000 mile mark. In my case and in many other cases the warranty pays for itself up to ten times over. I essentially can buy the extended warranty for every vehicle I buy until my time is done and still come out ahead of the game. Heck, I'm probably the reason for the 7 year and engine hour limits on the new warranties.

I only post this information to help. It really twists me up when a new user comes here and blows up the internet because they lost an engine at 102,000 miles and ford won't pay anything towards it. It's a bad situation for all parties when that happens.

Just for reference I dont put on many miles either but got the diesel for towing a 14-15 k fiver.I do about 8k a year. You can get the ford esp 7 yr from flood ford pretty cheap.I got the zero deductable with loaner car 60 k mile 7yr for about 1200.Well worth the piece if mind in my estimation. My dealer wanted in the neighborhood of 3-3500 for the esp add on.I did the math on the geico mechanical breakdown and talked to my agent who quoted me how much the rate of the mechanical breakdown was going to go up each yr and it was cheaper to buy the esp in the end.The rate at the end of 7 yrs was much much more then the initial 1-3 yr rate.Plus theres no deductable if something does happen. But alot of guys would have to buy a higher mileage esp and that changes the numbers. So its a personal money decision.

OK. I went a drove the 2015 today. It's an XLT with the off road package. I have a few questions.
It has the 3.31 gears. I've always liked deep gears and my present truck has 4.10's (last one had 4.30's). But I don't tow much more than 10K and I'm more interested in fuel economy then dragging 16k around. What kind of economy could I expect? My 6.8 gas sits around 10mpg towing 10k on level ground. Unloaded its about 12-14mpg on flat ground.
Body dimensions. I'd like to use my current topper as it's the same oxford white color. Will it fit onto the 2015 bed? I realize the tail gate step won't let the rear window close unless I can get a different lower plastic piece for it.
Power. Its been a while since my last diesel but I thought I remembered more low end torque. This truck should have mountains more than my V10 but it sure doesn't feel like it. Maybe under light loads it can't build enough boost? Maybe its because it is so much quieter than my 7.3 or 6.0?
Maintenance. As a mechanic I've always worked on my own trucks. For the first time in my life I felt like I was looking at an impossible task. The engine bay is absolutely completely full. I would imagine that removing the cab is the only way to get big jobs done.
Build date. This truck was built 08/2014. I was kind of hoping it would be a later build and its been sitting awhile. Any problems with this?
I may pull the trigger on this truck next week.

The 3.31 gears will get you the best fuel mileage and many tow fairly heavy with them.
I have the 3.55 in my F350 and will tell you there is NO comparison to my 7.3 with 3.73....
This thing has SO much more power and loves to pull, or run up the road with nothing behind it. I didn't buy it for fuel mileage, but it beats my 7.3 hands down there as well.
Buy it, drive it and enjoy it!

As much as they tried, the 6.7 does not respond to throttle like a gas V8 or V10. I know, I know, the V10 is the best motor, etc...but the diesel power you get is almost laughable when the boost comes in and you're turning about 2000rpm. If you want to feel the power put the shifter in M, ease through 1st gear, shift to 2nd after the torque converter locks in, floor it, shift through the gears while trying to keep it below 3000rpm.

Emissions control won't give you max power right away. Torque converter eases in too soft for me and the auto trans likes high rpms for some reason. Power really drops off over 3,000rpm. Just rolling into the throttle while you are in M5 going 45mph you will feel the rush that will take you to 85mph in a hurry. Jump off the line is not where it's at. My wife's 5.4 V8 will get off the line quicker than my truck but obviously gets dusted from 30mph up.

My truck has the 3.55 and I can average 20mpg if I set the cruise between 45-60 mph and I don't have any load. (Except the 400 lbs of diesel and my tools and ice chest). It takes work but it can be done. The picture shows my day today, I reset the trip monitor before I left the fuel station so you see how I did today.

You'll love the truck. Be patient with the def fluid and with the first 10,000 miles you drive as the truck breaks in.

I hope I can get close to that on my fairbanks run (without a trailer) ruschejj... However, I only have just under 5k miles on mine. Did you notice that you started to get better mileage as the truck broke in?

Well, obviously I did not get a dpf regen cycle during that drive, it would have dropped to 18 I bet.

My mpg isn't that great and I think it's inconsistent. It's very hard to tell what's going on and figuring out why I'm getting 13 mpg instead of 10 (avg towing mpg) is hard because of so many variables. I really don't know if the hours on the drivetrain have broken it in and gained me some economy.

One thing I'm certain of though, doing a lot of all day highway drives with a trailer in tow is the optimum duty cycle for the dpf. I experience very few active regen cycles.

That is some impressive fuel economy. If I go this route I can only hope for that.

What about the HPFP failures of a few years ago? Is this still an issue with the 6.7? I'm not wanting a 15K repair bill for nothing I did.
I wish I had ordered a truck instead of trying to decide about what is currently on the lot. I like the XTR plus package. There is one an hour away but its another F350 and I was thinking about going back to an F250 this time.
I know chrome won't get you home, but I like some shiny stuff. I'm like a crow in that regard.
