Ok so I have an 89 fsb and the motor crapped out on me, I have a donor motor in a 96 f-150 ready to go in, however I have a few questions. I know the firing order is different as are the plug ins for the distributor, what all am I going to need from the 96 to successfully make my 89 run with the 96 motor?
Rule #1 of engine swaps is... do not attempt to use any wiring the comes with the donor motor.
So for your swap that means remove the upper intake manifold and disconnect everything on the donor and remove it, and when you install the motor it will get the '89 engine wiring harness. There will be a sensor or two that won't have a wire to connect to but that is OK.
So differences between these motors include..
The distributor: '89 has a TFI module onboard while the '96 used a remote TFI. You will need to use the '89 distributor but before installing it in the '96 you must swap drive gears, the '89 motor had a cast iron flat tappet cam while the '96 has a steel roller cam and the distributor gears must match.
The EGR: The '96 uses a DPFE system while the '89 uses a position sensor. You need to use the '89 tube, valve and sensor so swap those to the '96 once it is installed.
IAC sensor: This is the intake air temp sensor, it's located in the lower intake on the '89 but in the airbox on the '96. Again you need to be compatible with the '89 system so you will have to swap lower intake portions.
When the motor is installed wire the spark plugs for the HO firing order.
