Besides the usual visual, driveability and leak checks, look for:
- oil pan rust - not necessary unless the engine swap is in the future...
radiator plastic side seam leaks esp. during engine cool-down period/overnight
auto tranny and transfer case operation - electric push button motor/connector is a prob. area
auto hub operation (get it in sand or mud and try the 4x4 system)
rust in inner rear fender lips and bottom of tailgate
radius arm bushing deterioration
cracked exhaust manifold/y etc.
roof/rain gutter area cracks
compression check
emissions (incl. making sure all the emissions stuff (cat, O2 sensors, etc. ) are still in-place
airbag (some rebuilt wrecks are resold w/out the bags to save the rebuilder $
I bought the truck last night and it seems to be pretty good. Dosent Idle great when its cold, but thats cause it has bad gas(almost a year old according to the previous owner). There is a pretty loud exhaust leak, the tube on the back of the two exhaust manifolds was broken by the previous owner. Has windshild leak, so the headliner sags, but I can fix both good. Has manual hubs and x-case. tailgate is rusty, but thats the only place on the whole truck. Has good paint too. Got the whole thing for $500.
