we've got a work explorer that is whining, not squealing. i was thinkingi'ts the idler.. i don't know either. we've got a parts truck. think i should just start pulling and replacing? i know it's not the belt squealing, it's definately a whine. but it's only effected by rpm, not by steering or amp. load..
Mine is has a high pitch sqeak and I replace 2 pulleys and it did not help, The belt and the water pump and still no go. So I am going to see if replacing that 3rd pulley will do it I hope. If not I think it might be the alternator even though it sounds like the noise I hear is coming from the engine.
I've got a 98 Mountaineer, AWD 5.0 V8. It has the annoying whine. Of course the default thought is the power steering pump, which of course winds up not being that simple. Change the alternator... nope. Took the belt off and started spinning pulleys, the only one that made a sound was the water pump. The sound was very much like the whining that was heard while the engine was running. One of my mechanics checked it out while it was running and noted the tensioner seemed to crimp up when the accelerator was applied. This being the case, it could have put too much tension on the water pump pulley, prematurely wearing out the bearing. The water pump and tensioner get replaced Friday, so we'll see what happens.
I have a 2000 Explorer, AWD 5.0 that's making that same whinning sound.. Did the water pump and tensioner solve your problem? I'm taking mine in next week.
