I have a 1986 ford f series, 4x2, V6, 3speed manual. What I was wondering is
if I can take out my 3 speed manual to put in a 4 speed manual, just like that wihtout pushing the engine over its limit..
My bad, 6 cyl, 4.9 L
well my speedometer only goes up to 85 and I've read that they only mark up to 85 because of political reasons back in the 60's and 70's and you really can go higher than 85, but if I were to go faster than 85mph with my truck only being a 3 speed would I blow out my engine?? or would the truck lose control?
It's an old truck and I finally have the money and time to fix it up. I kinda want to turn it into a classic hot rod kind of truck without losing its originality
3 speed in 3rd gear is 1 to 1 gear ratio. 4 speed with the granny gear is 1 to 1 in 4th gear, same as the 3 speed, no difference. There is a 4 speed overdrive tranny where 4th is overdrive. That tranny would give you more top speed.
yes the overdrive tranny will bolt on to where your existing tranny is. Your I6 has 115 horsepower....
but if you want more power and you can do it yourself I would look for new higher compression heads or look into getting a 351W or a 302W
well with everything it is in all how much you want to spend in your truck. the more you spend the faster you can go and the smarter your buying choices are the more HP and TQ per dollar.
do you want new parts, used parts (salvage yard), or .....
If you're going to do anything with it you should just try to find a ZF five speed for it. Might find someone giving away an M5OD that is in good shape as well but the ZF is a better trans. Straight six has the torque to pull overdrive all day long down low and will practically double your engine life...so what's that, 600k on a straight six?
The reason you won't find any for '86 is because no overdrive manual transmissions were offered before '87. The M5OD was used on the six cylinder and 302 later on and the ZF was used on the HD or diesel trucks. As such they will all bolt up to the earlier engines but you need the clutch setup, crossmember, etc. http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=71956
