broken axles?

Get a horse! Or a Jeep. Seriously, its kind of a specialized question. I've never seen a post on here about anybody using a late model pickup truck for rock crawling. But my guess would be the CV joints would fail before the axles.

Yes, the 8.8 is not what you want for crawling, I have seen them shear at the spline. The joint and stub seem to hold pretty well but there weak link is when they forge the splines, and they dont break smooth always a jagged edge. look for a dana 60 35 spline, bone yards are full of them. Any HD f-250 will have one under its front.

Thanks for the input. FYI I have an EB but I'm considering a dedicated crawler (NOT A JEEP) that doesn't have a diff hanging low, and I don't want to run Humvee tires for price. Just looking into the strength of components.
