Backpressure?

I have recently purchased a 84 F-250 with 6.9, things under the hood are pretty messy. The fool before me has chopped up the wiring pretty bad but truck still runs. Problem is, at freeway speeds engine forms backpressure through intake and produces a very loud "whop whop" sound. First time it happened I thought I had an exaust leak, then it stopped when I returned to city street speeds. Happened again yesterday at freeway speeds, I pulled over and found noise was coming from air cleaner.
Does anyone know what this could be? I have read many forums and haven't found anyone with this problem. Help.

Backpressure?

Look at the lid to your aircleaner. There's a BIG thing called the 'soup bowl' (yes, a technical term) on the underside of the lid that restricts the flow of air going down the intake. For performance reasons, this is generally removed (with a sawzall) or replaced (with a bowl-less lid). That may be the cause of your 'whop whop', and consequently, nothing to fret about. Just another one of those purty diesel noises.
