When my dad had his bronco when I was younger he would always talk about doing a diesel swap, but after losing two 351s and two 302s to really heavy loads, he just traded the bronco for an 85 f250 diesel. Well as fortune would have it, we sold the diesel to my cousin when dad bought his 89 f250 with the 7.3 a few years later. My cousin sold it to his brother in law.. And his brother in law left it up at their dads house.. And I scrapped a whole bunch of old trucks for them. Including the old diesel truck. But I saved the motor and tranny and T-case. So I have access to a 6.9idi with a t-18. I was going to put this in my f250 and take the 351w from the truck and teach myself how to take it apart and put it back together so I can build something.. But Im selling the truck, and I have this diesel motor laying around collecting dust. It would make one sreamin bronco. So has anyone done a diesel swap with their bronco? What would you guys recommend for wiring, getting the gauges and all to work?
well I wouldn't call the 6.9 a screamer, its more of a Tortise at best. with that said its a stout motor.
typically a 7.3 would be more worth the effort, and there will be much effort involved getting that motor in and running. if your plans are to do this on your 89 bronco you shouldn't have to worry much about the electrical aspect. everything on your year is mechanical like the speedo and such which is a bonus. get motor mounts from the same year F250/F350 running that motor, also get the trans crossmember. you may end up having to get the drive shafts altered. Good luck
from the cab forward on our broncos is very similar to F250/F350's. find out what the last year for the 6.9 in a truck and get those mounts. I am unsure bout the 7.3 being the same, may have to ask in one of the diesel forums.
The 6.9 IDI and the 7.3 IDI share the same block. I would find a turbo and a 5 speed, you will make much more power and get better MPG. A member in the IDI section swapped a 7.3 in his bronco, and he is getting MPG in the 20s, and he hasn't put a turbo on yet.
