Hello gang, please help an old dude out. I was driving into the night a couple days ago and noticed first that the dash lights are not working. As it got darker I then noticed that my tail lights and running lights were also not working. I have a 2002 F250 powerstroke extended cab. I pulled the fuse panel cover off but can't find a blown fuse.
Can someone tell me what fuse number would be suspect, and also if there may be a bad relay in the mix? The daylight sensor on the dash does not seem to be functioning either. In good light the headlights stay on (when switched to automatic mode) no matter if it is covered or not when the ignition is on.
I'm thinking more along the lines of the switch malfunctioning or a bad ground somewhere rather than a fuse. The reason I feel like that is because your malfunctioning items run across multiple fuses.
Check fuses F7 & F17 in the under-dash fuse box. Report findings.
Is there any difference in the behavior of the running lamps/instrument illumination in any of the headlight switch positions of PARK, AUTO or HEADLIGHT?
Is this vehicle equipped with DRL (Daytime Running Lamps)?
F17 is popped so I will need to go get a replacement and see if that solves the problem. What caused it to pop is now the question. I tow a 28' fifth wheel RV that has a 7way plug. I can't eliminate it as a contributor.
There is no difference in the operation of the lights when the switch is in Auto, Off, Park only, or headlights on.
I don't have the operators manual but I don't think I have DRL. I have watched the light sensor switch the dash lights on or off along with the running lights on the fifth wheel while dash selector is switched in the Auto mode. I leave it in Auto mode all of the time as a matter of habit.
Thanks for your help. I will report back once I see if the new fuse will hold once replaced.
With F17 blown, the autolamp ambient light sensor doesn't have power so it won't operate correctly. Get it replaced and see if it survives or blows again. Make very careful observations as needed to determine switch positions and conditions that cause it to blow. Better pick up several fuses, just in case....
The first fuse blew right out. I was out in some brush previously to having the problem. I found a place in the harness that had been pulled into the frame back at the hitch. I repaired it and then replaced the fuse again and it seems very happy now.
You are very knowledgeable and I really appreciate your advise. All systems are go and working normally.
