I had a horrible experience with my 2000 X and thought this may help.. I noticed last night that all of a sudden, the OD light on the shift lever was lit and very dim.. It came on all by itself.. I moved the lever slightly, and it went out.. Early this morning, I noticed the same thing again, but this time when I moved the lever, several warning lights came on-- ABS, airbag, low fuel.. etc.. I wiggled the shift lever and everything wnet back to normal. about 5 minutes later, the OD light came on and a small amount of smoke came out of the steering column.. I immediately grabbed the shift lever, pulled over and shut everything off.
Heres the deal-- After removing the steering column shroud and shift lever boot, I found that the wiring which runs thru the shift lever goes thru a small strain-relief clip mounted to the lever boot holder. The clip is mounted in such a way that it actually pinches the wire against the steering column member. I removed the wires from the clip and found that all 3 had worn thru the insullation and were melted together (the wire, not just the insullation). I had to seperate and cut out the melted portion, solder the wires back together and re-route them. I can not believe that this is not a Recall !!! I happen to be a real motorhead, but this could cause someone real problems !!
