If running automatic tranny Hughes performance builds great torque converter! I have been running Hughes! Strong setup and get a little fuel mileage also 9 mpg if I drive easy on 40" hawgs and aired up hard!

Lots of good info here. If wanting to beef up the drivetrain, it sounds like u-joints are the first priority. Then axles? In thinking more about my question and the replies above, it looks like one would take different paths if doing serious off-roading versus wanting to put power on the pavement. I'm more in the later camp. Like advertised max power specs on aftermarket transmissions, anybody have specs for the clutch, NP435, transfer case, etc.?

Why bother with 1350s if you're going to spend the money?

I went to 1410s, mainly because that's what th F450e trans I'm running had a yoke for, I'm using the drive line out of a 2002 SD truck. My truck is a complete mutt.

Decide how you want to use the truck then you can compile a list of modifications.

For me the best upgrade I've done is Hydroboost, everyone else I know that has done it says the same thing and once my new shop is set up 2 other FTE members are getting Hydroboost installed.

I have a 78 150 with a 5.4L & 4R70 OD trans bolted to the 205 T case. I'm running 37" Pit Bull Rockers. I do need a little more gear but that will come in time. I have to say I don't drive it much but when I do I love it.

A friend of mine offerede a hydro booster just the other day. I'm taking him up on it.

Also, Shocks.

I am running Bilstien 7100 series remote reservoir shocks in the front and currently some cheapy Ranchos in the rear. Huge upgrade over even the Monroe gas shocks that were on it.

It's a good point to define the end-state and then choose upgrades consistent with getting there. My questions also come from being a mechanical engineer in a former life and thinking about strength of components and materials. Even today I noticed a newer model Dodge 2500 with a massive-looking rear axle that dwarfs my D60. Got me to thinking whether this was needed to handle the engine power, towing, or more for looks and customer appeal? Lots of the TV shows also seem to install upgrades that seem overkill or mismatched with remaining components.

I agree shows like trucks and others are overkill with unlimited money with more of a cool factor than reality
