Installing a 6R140 behind a 3V 6.8L

Hey all,

It sounds like Ford has been mating the newer 6spd 6R140 with the 6.8L in the f650 lineup for a few years. I'm curious if anyone has done this swap in a 250/350 and documented it? here are two links that I've found. This is the sort of thing I'd like to consider someday down the road when a tranny replacement is mandatory in my truck. Looking for inputs, thanks!

Haven't heard of anyone doing it - yet.

It would require a donor F650

The 6R140 numbers get me a little excited. I'm thinking a V10 with 4.56 or 4.88 would fit reeeeal nice with the 6-speed tranny!

4R100
1-2.71
2-1.54
3-1.00
4-0.71

6R140
1-3.97
2-2.32
3-1.52
4-1.15
5-0.86
6-0.67

I think it would be great. It seems it should be a fairly straight forward swap I would think. Electrical would most likely be the biggest hurdle but maybe not. Engine elec. items and other items you would think should be close to identical. Hope someone does this soon. It would open many doors for people wanting more in the towing dept.

Hmmm. So who has access to a full breakdown of a newer F650 so we can get a parts list started? I agree that the electrical would be a hurdle. Anyone have direction on figuring that out too?

The new six speed and the older five speed torque shift auto transmission are a much more complicated electrical/Computer system than the old 4r100 set up, the skinny pedal controls the transmission that controls the engine, backwards from the old 4r100. I do believe you'll need some sort of stand alone computer system to control the transmission..... Even then I'm not sure how you make the engine computer happy with not controlling the transmission anymore? Definitely an interesting idea but way over my head in programming it to work.

If they make the motor/tranny combo already for the 650's, perhaps that computer could be used??

Im not exactly sure what V10 is in the new F650's but would assume it was the 3V V10, and I'm assuming from the 4r100 comparison you have a 2V V10? If all of my assumptions are correct you would need to swap the engine and transmission and computer's to make it work..... Not impossible but you would be breaking some new ground there.

Ha, oops! Got you mixed up with truckfella. If they have the 6r140 behind the 3v V10 on the new f650's the biggest challenge would be finding the correct computer to control everything on an older 3v V10 truck.
