I couldn't find it in the archives, maybe someone can help me. I plan on doing a little engine work on my '80 F250 with 351M and plan on replacing valve stem seals. I ordered a Fel-Pro engine kit set (KS2308) which included the valve stem seals. I haven't taken the engine out of my truck yet but have a few extra heads that came with it, I figured I'd practice replacing the seal on one of the extra heads before doing it for real. The extra head is a D5AE A2A (1975 351M?). I took the seal off this head but it isn't even close to the new seals I received in the Felpro kit......Did the seals change from year to year? The one that came off the extra head has two grooves that metal retainer bands fit into. The seals that came in the kit do not have the grooves and are flared at the bottom and are wider than the seal that came off the head, too wide to fit tightly on the guide. Did the heads change that much between '75 and '80? I haven't taken the heads off of the '80 yet but am trying to get parts together ahead of time. Also, the Felpro kit came with 2 bags of seals, one bag has 8 seals that are not as long as the other bag that has 16 seals. Thanks for any info you can give me!
OK I think I found the post with pictures. It answered most of my questions and looks like the extra head I have was machined to fit the positive seals. But it leads me to another question, If I read the info correctly does it mean that the stock valve stem seals stay attached to the valve stem and slide up and down over the valve guide? I thought that the seals would stay attached to the valve guide and allow the valve stem to slide up and down thru the seal, is this what the positive seals are supposed to do? The cam I'm thinking about using (comp 260H)doesn't have much more lift than stock so I plan on using the original style seals. Thanks for the help.
