Transmission went out on my 02 powerstroke 110,000 miles today. No reverse, third, or forth when warm. Had been pulling tanks of anhydrous ammonia all day when the problem showed up. This is admittedly very hard on pickups, especially automatic transmissions due to pulling 16,000 lbs at speeds under 30 mph on soft gravel roads.
I have a trans temp gauge and have seen it climb into the low 190s doing this in years past but have always figured nothing was being hurt to bad because we have a lot older trucks with a lot more miles that lived the same life every spring.
I really don't tow that often and though I have a TS chip I leave it on stock for this kind of work. There is also a barely noticeably whine when I drove is home tonight after it had cooled of for about 4 hours.
I'd like to know what I can expect to pay for a Ford rebuild, for a decent local shop rebuild, and what I can expect to pay for a BTS/ John Woods rebuild and how long it would take to get one.
I'm busier than heck right now with field work so the truck will have sit for now but I have the facilities and abilities to pull it myself. I'd probably rather do it that anyhow since corn isn't $7 a bushel anymore and the budget is a little tight.
Of course I do not know any local folks in your area to suggest but the two you listed have great reviews with what they build.Others will chime in that have the BTS/JW tranny rebuilds in their units and can tell you $$$.
Good luck with the truck and the farming
