new equipment questions

Hi everyone, i have an 84 F150 reg. cab and am about to purchase some stereo equipment. My first question is what kind of enclosure i can fit behind the seat as it doesnt appear that theres much room there. I haven't really checked anything out in the truck yet because i just got the truck from a relative. Im not even sure if there are speakers in the doors as this is a really basic F150 with not many options. Im looking for nice sound quality with heavy hear-me-coming type bass. So what would be best choice for subs (fitment #1 concern), amp, speakers, and deck(thinking about the Pioneer Premeir line of cd units). And also how hard would this all be to hook up. There is so set in stone money limit but i'd like to keep it under $1000 if possible. Thanks.

Insallation is quite easy. If you can't figure it out, come back here with before the installation of each product and we can help.

Pioneer Premier HU is a nice choice, but you're only paying for an additional 1 yr. warranty over a standard Pioneer. The regular Pioneer (say the DEH-3500) is the same, feature wise, as the Pioneer Premier P350. Either way, Pioneer makes quality, affordable head units.

You really do need to check to see if your F150 came with factory speakers. Even if it didn't, it still might have the "template" in the doors for a speaker. I believe back then Ford used 6.5" in the door. There are a million 6.5"s to choose from, so...here's my $.02 as for a booming system...

Pioneer dehp-3500 currently $160, after rebate, at Crutchfield.
Alpine Type R 6.5" components. $145 at Ikesound.com. If you can increase your budget $60-$70, the JL XR 650 CSi component set would be better. For an amp to power them, the US Acoustics usb-2080 is about $105, shipped, from Crutchfield. The US Acoustics 2100 would be an even better choice, especially if you went with the JL's. It's $25-$30 more.

The subs...this is a little tougher because you have a reg. cab. But...many, many people have reg. cab trucks (compact and full size) with 1 or 2 subs. You'll probably have to go with 10" subs unless you want to move you seat up "a little too much" For great budget subs, that have great sound quality, great ability to get loud as all hell, and require a very small box, I would recommend a pair of Elemental Designs 10k's, which are $115-$120, each. Go to edesignaudio.com for current prices. Depending on the room you have/are willing to give up, you might be able to squeeze a pair of 12's behind there. With these subs, you only need around 600ish watts to get them pumping hard. JBL 600.1 is around $200 at Ikesound.

The box for your subs might have to be custom built, unless you have decent box building skills (it's not hard if you plan/draw everything out ahead of time).

1100 watt amp kit from Walmart is of high quality and provides everything you need to wire up both amps. $25

All said, that should come out to about $1000.

Ahh, I like spending other people's money
