I just took my truck out to the strip and I was kind of dissappointed at my times. My first and best run was 16.01 and it got worse from there on. I think the problem is that I was getting no traction at all on the track considering I don't have a posi. my 60' times were 2.684. My truck has a 460 with edelbrock 750 carb, 1 3/4 headers that dump out of 3" hooker aero chambers. I thought at least high 15's. Do you guys know where to get a posi cheap? preferably a locker or something. It's a 9" rear end.
Join the club on the traction problem. I thinking about some lift bars. I also need a trac loc unit. I have 3.50's open and its ok for around town, but some steeper gears, limited slip of some sort and slicks would be great. The one time I've been with this truck I had a 60' of 2.5, spinning and only ran a 15 flat with a missed shift into third. The traction is horrid. The previous owner had a similar combo in another 79 he had and would cut some good lights with 4.11 posi, slicks, and some slapper bars. Might go that route minus the 4.11 can't make that sacrifice.
You can get a locker out of a junkyard sometimes or check e-bay or swap meets. Try to get the whole chunk so its easy to swap.
Check your local junkyards for the Limited Slip unit. Its far better than a posi, IMHO. Unless you go with an ARB air locker. Which is better yet. If you are gonna just race the thing I would go with 4.10 gears. I had a really fast truck with 1.71 custom gears, however it went through tires quickly if I wasn't careful.
If you want a cheap solution and you don't do alot of street driving a spool is very cheap and effective. Makes it difficult for street driving and will accelerate tire wear on pavement, yet some people like them. You do need to be careful, very careful with these. Just depends on what your uses are and what your needs are.
Don't use a spool on the street, it is dangerous to you and everyone around you. It would be OK for a run to the gas station b4 you load it on the trailer to take it to the track or rock crawling etc.
I would only run a spool on a weekend racer. My truck is my daily driver so I will either go the limited-slip route or Locker route. I will definitely a set of slapper bars and M/T drag slicks. I heard you don't have to use tubes in slicks and that if you don't the worse that could happen is the tire looses air slowly. A guy I knew had a tube bind during a run and he totaled his car. Should I go without a tube on slicks??
Thanks for the replys they are very helpful.

Just curious, people are saying they would rather go limited slip rather than posi... I just wanted a clarification. I thought that limited slip was the industry term and posi and trac-lock were chevy and fords names for there own limited slip differentials? Is this not true?
A posi is a spool. It locks them up all the time. A Limited Slip allows you to drive with an open diff most of the time but when things get tough it locks up both wheels. A locker is just manually operated rather than something sensing the slippage.
About the 1.71 gears, you are right, they weren't for drag racing. They had an awesome topend though.

Thats correct, I along with most just throw the terms around carelessly.
A spool is not a posi. Posi is a GM term describing their limited slip differential. Ford calls them lockers. Not sure if that is a Ford term or something they borrowed from their supplier.
