Hi i have a 1990 ford f150 4x4 ext. cab with the aod tranny
My problem is when i go to lock in the hubs there is a snapping noise from the drivers side It does this even if its not in 4x4 and the hubs are just locked. i dont think its the hubs cause its the second set ive had on it . it used to have auto hubs then i replaced with mm hubs which seemed to get seized up in the winter and hard to turn on one side so i replaced them with the warn hubs still that snapping from the drivers side.
when i put it in 4x4 it goes into 4 wheel drive cause ive tested it. would it be an axle joint gone bad or somethin else? thanks for any replys.
Does it snap when you manually lock in the hubs and can feel it in your fingers, or when you engage the 4WD at the trans case lever? If it happens when you are locking the hubs, it sounds like the spring inside is broken. You may want to purchase a couple of rebuild kits, unless you are going to change them out and install new. Both, kit and new hubs should include the springs and other assorted hardware for your particular rig. Let us know, thanks.... Talk with you later.... Hey there Mustang221!!
the axle joints have never been replaced and it does have 360,000 kms just wonderin if anybody has had the same problem and it turned out to be an axle joint i wouldnt think it be one of the u joints in the front driveshaft because i dont think it turns unless its in 4x4 and it makes the snappin even if the hubs are just locked and not in 4x4 thats why i think it might be an axle joint on the drivers side
i replaced the auto hubs like a year or so ago ( i never really cared for them anyways ) they wouldnt go into 4x4 i know this cause i got stuck once and i had to get one of my friends and there half ton to get me out but then i replaced them with the mile marker hubs and 4x4 worked again and no snappin until like a month or so later it was in 4x4 cause it would get power to the front just that it would make a snapping noise on the drivers side i replaced them with warn hubs which in my opinion are far easier to engage only 1/4 turn as opposed to like 1 full turn with the mm hubs which seized in the winter some times i honestly dont think its the hubs because they are only a few months old and hardly been used mainly just when we get a big snow storm down here and stuff hope that answer any questions
The front driveline spins all the time the hubs are locked.
I am having a similar problem with a noise coming from the front end with the hubs engaged. I would describe my noise of more of a ratcheting/clunking sound though. I replaced my stock manuals with MM's thinking that was the problem. (I actually tried Warn's first, didn't fit, long story.) That didn't solve anything. The noise happens from about 5 - 10 MPH up to about 20 - 25 MPH with the hubs locked and the t-case in 2H. If I put the t-case in 4H, the noise stops. I think I have narrowed the noise down to the slip joint in the front driveline. The u-joints feel solid, but if I turn the driveshaft back and forth I can feel and hear a clunk coming from right at the slip joint. Tearing apart the driveline is my next project after I figure out the stupid clutch in my motorcycle.
mine sometimes will make the clunkin noise you mention but it is usually more of a snappin noise come from what seems to be near the front tire not from where the front drive shaft is located i know the front axles turn when the hubs are locked i was just wonderin if the front drive shaft moves when 4x4 is not engaged
I also have the same problem
89 f350 65,000 miles centurion 6 inch lift w/36" tsl's
It started about 10 month ago after a 800 mile trip
at all speeds and mostly in turns coming from the drivers side.
mines more of a poping noise sound loud that's why I stoped driving it.
I also need help !!!!!
already ordered lot of part's for It but not fix yet.

fordman's problem sounds like an axle joint. by the way, if you have manual hubs locked in the driveshaft WILL turn in 2wd, if it doesn't something is definitely wrong
