It appears that the difference between the 9.75 and the 9.75 HD are that the 9.75HD comes in 3.73 and it holds more fluid. I see no mention of anything else being different.
I'm sure there are more differences than we can see in that document. I was checking out the specs on the Transit 3500 a few weeks ago, and was surprised to see the 9.75" axle being used in the DRW Transits. With a GAWR as high as 7,200 lbs, which is far more than I've ever seen it rated for in any other application. I'm thinking the 9.75 HD must include beefier shafts, bearings, and perhaps thicker tubes, but I can't find that anywhere.
OK so I guess I'm an idiot. How can I tell what axle I have? Code on the door is L9. I have the manual e-brake. Trailer tow package.
When I do that Ford Etis website it shows I Don't have the e-locker when I do (and a few other things incorrect), so how can I tell for sure which diff I have?

The E-locker thing is just strange. Every truck I looked up with an e-locker was showing as NOT having it on ETIS. Everything else appears to be correct though.
The 8.8" differential housing is symmetrical, whereas the 9.75" housing is not. If you have the manual E-brake you should have the 9.75".
Here's a photo of a 9.75" differential posted by Gary Lewis:
The Supercrew Lariat 4x2 I am looking at has the optional 6650 GVWR and 3.73 locker.
Would this be the non-HD version of the 9.75?
I've had quite a few SVT Lightings that came with the 9.75 and saw a lot of 10 second 1/4 mile trucks and even quicker never have a problem with the rear. One helluva strong unit IMHO.
That's my understanding from the research I've done. However, I've already realized that reality and what Ford's publications say are two different things.
