noise from rearend
I have a 1985 F-250 6.9L Diesel with 158k. Last week I noticed a whirring noise that varied with road speed, starting at about 30 mph and getting a little louder up to 70.
I jacked up the axle on both sides, started the engine and ran it to 50 mph indicated in 2nd gear and could not reproduce the noise.
Dropped the truck down, took it for a ride and the noise came back.
It's not a gear whine, and though I didn't feel any slop in the rear yoke / pinion area, I did notice that the front pinion area of the diff casting was really warm, more so than the rest of the diff case.
There is also a sligt oil stain around the pinion seal, but not enough leakage to cause a drip on the ground.
Anybody have any suggestions as to what is causing the noise?
I believe I have the Dana 70, it's a 2WD with 12 X 3 brakes.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Nate
-- but-- that doesn't explain the warm, almost hot temp of the diff case right where the drive shaft yoke enters the diff housing. This was after a 10 mi in-town trip last night.
Anybody out there know if this is normal? Ive just never had occasion to stop what I've been doing to check diff temps before, so I have no previous knowledge to go on-
I'll report back
Thanks,
Nate
I won't say DUH!
That's a totally reasonable thought there.
I pulled the rear driveshaft, and the U joints were indeed worn-so I replaced them, pulled the Diff cover and dumped the fluid.
No metal in the Diff oil, but it needed changing anyway (first time in 50K) and no play anywhere in the driveshaft yoke or pinion bearings, and the nut was still tight.
Buttoned it back up, put new fluid in it, and the noise has diminished somewhat. Maybe it's just the sound of a 20 year old drivetrain with 158K miles. We took it out for a 60 mile run and just got back.
Thanks for your suggestions, Im taking the 5th wheel out this coming weekend. If it holds up after that, I guess I'm ok.
