I am looking at putting a tach in my 92 f150 2x4 300 i6.
Any idea which one to look for. Looking for low cost. 2nd how hard is it to install? What is the procedure?
Tachs are easy to find, you can get one at Autozone for 40 bucks. I got a Sunpro SuperTach2 for $40 and installed it on the steering column on my 84 with a simple 4inch stainless steel hose clamp. Wiring is easy 4 wires sometimes 3: Black- ground, Red- power only with ignition on, Green- negative side of the coil, and White- wires into your instrument cluster lights (some tachs do not have a lighting wire) .
See mine in my gallery. $65 at JC Whitney. Lighting is poor (I have found this on other tachs, including one by Autometer), but the face is huge and the max 4000 rpm is perfect for the 300 I6. Also the mounting location is pretty good.
You might be able to find a stock tach out of a manual truck. My truck used to be a 5-speed so it has a factory tach in the dash. I don't want to say for sure, but it might already be wired up for one (I could be wrong). Might be worth checking out.
Look for the entire guage dash piece out of a truck that was a standard at the wreckers. It should be just plug and play. At least mine was in my 1991.
thanks guys. I looked into a factory guage cluster and all I could find was one for $100 plus and I don't even know if they have a tach or not. (looked on internet) For now I put a $30 Super Tach II from O'Reilly's in until I can find a factory cluster.
