63 manual transmission issues

3 speed transmission rebuild
I will get right to it.

My 1963 ford F100/223 with 3 speed on the tree, (top loader) has an issue I and my transmission guy ( yes he has been in business for 35 years and has worked on these before) and I can't figure out.
The parts diagram I have only show a 3 speed over drive. It looks like the same transmission, but the overdrive unit bolts onto the rear of the tranny. (like to get one of those but that's a different story.) The diagrams are from 1963 Ford Truck complete parts catalog, and the 1961 Ford shop manual with the addendum for 62 & 63.

The problem is the truck doesn't down shift from 3rd to second Grinds alot but no shiftee to 2nd unless you down shift to 1st and then up to second (keeping the clutch in from 3 to 1 to 2, then releasing. He took it apart and ordered new parts for it. Now it seems the splash washer(?) makes it so you can't get the spring clips that hold the primary shaft and gears in place. So e installed everything without it.

What happens is the the primary shaft slides forward a little, which allows the brass synchro 33 tooth rings not to engage and grind away, and it won't down shift into second. Up shifting from 1st isn't an issue.

Anyone have this problem and/or know a solution? I put more pics up in my garage mostly of the outsdide of the tranny with the identifying #'s.

There are a few of the truck as I was working on it. I taught myself to weld, Grind and paint on this truck, so it is far from perfect but we love it as a daily driver, and not worry about dings and dents.

Any Help with the tranny issue would be appreciated, or information about getting the overdrive!

Thanks

There is a space that lets the blocker rings move away from the slider hub enough that the blocker ring goes past the dog ears and is able to spin om the shaft

Not sure why you are posting your nearly exact first post from the other thread after all the input and work you've done. Did you try to run down the bearing roller question asked in your other thread?

Unhappy 63 manual transmission 3 speed

I did. the input output bearings are the right part # and measured exactly as specified. The snap ring on the input out shafts are seated as far out as the could go. The roller bearings are all in their place. with a couple thinner snap rings I might pick up about 1/8", but that isn't enough gain to keep the synchro blocker rings from slipping of the dog ears of the slider hub.

I posted here because I thought more transmission experience would be in this forum than the general old truck forum. I also thought re-posting the whole thread might be considered obnoxious. If I have committed some forum policy fo-par please let me know. I just want to fix my tranny.

I have a couple thoughts.

1) cutting the old (or some new ones)brass blocker rings and brazing the parts between the indents for the dog ears to extend the rings so the don't slip past the dog ears. Not sure this would hold up, as I don't know how much stress these are under.
2) make longer dog ears. Don't think I can bend that thick of a metal at that tight of a radius, but can mill a cave inside a piece of stainless, or weld extension pieces on the existing dog ears.
3) restudy the sequence of parts and see if there is a place for a spacer washer(s) somewhere ( I looked at the option before but couldn't find a place where it wouldn't interfere)

Please feel free to blast holes in my theories or offer suggestions to make them better.

Thanks

It's a big site but not that big. You usually get a response from the same folks when you title your thread "transmission".

I had one of these in a Mustang, but had it rebuilt at the dealer so I can't give you a first person rebuild story. But, you should not have to add parts or modify parts. And you should not do that.

These were produced by the billions and there are rebuild kits available, as you know. I think you are on to something such as a missing spacer or washer, so back to the diagrams. I think there were other new suggestions on the other thread as well.

Don't worry about any fox paws. Both threads are bumped to the top, maybe more answers will slide in.

Look at snap ring thicknesses. If possible get thinner snap rings. This will push the internals closer together.
