Looking at a 2009 150 that has the 4.6 3V in it. I know that this was the first year for this motor and transmission. Are there any major issues to be concerned with?
I don't think there are any problem in particular that you have to worry about. The 4.6 3v has been around for a while at this point they fixed whatever problems the 4.6 and 5.4 3v has on 08. I have a 2010 stx with the 4.6 3v, she was built at the end of 09 so I'm sure there's not to much of a difference. It runs great and I haven't had any complaints about the 6 speed trains and it has 88,000 now. Hope that helps a little, good luck.
'09 wasn't the first year for the 3V 4.6L, it was the first year they supposedly fixed the cam phaser problem in the 3V's but that seems to not be true, should also have the 1 piece plugs that supposedly won't snap off when they are changed.
The tranny's had some issues mainly addressed with the updated flashes.
Check out TSB 11-3-25 bulkhead sleeve connector for the transmission. At some point in time IT WILL LEAK. There is also a thread on it in this section; do a search for transmission leak. If buying from a dealer have them look up and perform the TSB.
Also go to youtube and search for ford f150 6r60 & 6r80 transmission fluid leak bulkhead sleeve repair by fordtechmakuloco. He explains the repair in detail with video.
Agree with the bulkhead connector. Mine was leaking when I test drove mine amd they replaced it before I bought it. I gave the 5.4. I will say it takes some time getting used to the 6 speed amd the acceleration below 2000 rpms isn't the best. Nice at cruising speeds when you need to pass though
