Background:
Picked up a spare trans to rebuild with Roland (mueckster) to mirror his build since my power levels are climbing and the stock trans has 244k on it and is dying rapidly.
Dilemma:
Build trans is an E99 with the on/off for the converter lockup, and the Excursion is an '01 with the PWM lockup. Can the E99 pump be used without any issues in my rig?
What's Been Done:
- Roland has done a bunch of research with nothing conclusive.
- Called Gearhead to ask if it would cause any issues with the tuning, they weren't completely sure and suggested I call BTS.
- Called BTS twice to ask about it, but they've been busy and I haven't gotten a call back, but I'll keep trying.
Any of y'all have any input or knowledge? Not looking for guesses or 'it shoulds', need experience or knowledge - if the latter has reference literature that'd be awesome.
We realize that there are differences in the Solenoid Valve Body and PCM tuning, as well. It would have been nice if the donor transmission would have been a later model, but is a reman unit and is in good shape. Our goal is to harvest as much of the usable parts as possible and eliminate having to swap any parts from his existing trans. A statement in the ATSG manual led me to believe there may be some diesel non-PWM 4R100 produced in the early '99 models, as some were produced in '98 and the change to PWM occurred in the year 1999.
With further research into the part number on the tag of the reman transmission, I have discovered that it also matches the same application as a 2000 model. This information has led me to believe that we, in deed, have a PWM lock up pump and companion parts. Disassembling the pump would verify this, but the numbers seem to point in that direction and I tend to agree.
You'll have to go ahead a split the pump halves to remove the clip that holds the sleeve in the housing. Send me a picture of the top of it before you split the pump. I may be able to tell without disassembly. The non-PWM should have a threaded hole in it and the PWM should have a little dowel sticking up. Refer to the diagram you had on your phone, if you still have it. Either way, we'll need to take it apart to inspect the gears, change the bushings, and make a few other mods, if necessary.
