Thanks train! Sorry to here about the clip failure, that sucks. Did you have to get a longer speedo cable?

Same cable. Worked fine. This was in my 89 F150.
My buddy glued the tail housing and I forgot to remind him to recheck the clip. It popped loose and the gear is likely floating along the shaft. Just time to pop housing off is all it will take but it is Dec and cold outside.

She also helped me process it.

Well now I think that's so COOL that I gave her honorary mention in the Kingdom. Towards the bottom of my thread's post #278.

Gavin, this was in my 89 that had an AOD in it. I don't think the end is any different then the early trucks? Same 1/4-20 bolt holds the clamp.

It's been so many years since I pulled the speedo cable out of the 69 I can't recall much about it.

And a BIG 2X on these words also. Good job Zack, I couldn't have said it better.
There are a bunch of guys I could say this to in this Kingdom but this is your thread so I'm saying it to you Gavin. I think we all already knew it but the above and this thread in General proves you got your life running on all eight cylinders. (6 for you 240/300 guys). "YOU" just keep bein' "YOU".

Yup, you got it, just the clamp and 1/4-20 bolt.

Hi Tim, thanks for the complements. I won't be needing the little torque wrench any time soon.

Finally got a picture of the clip I used(really bad idea).

Unfortunately it failed miserably. The very small "tang" was all that holds the gear in place and it wasn't bent far enough and as soon as you put any load on the gear(from the speedo cable turning) it pushed it right off. Ugh. Should have just put a groove in the shaft and used a snap ring(like 100 million toploaders out there). Why did I even think this was going to work? Musta been a rough day when I made my decision.

Anyhoo............I thought I would share my adventures in "bad decision making 101".
We have a long standing quote here at work. "Didn't think it would hold". Goes back 25 yrs, our young shipping/rec guy loaded the shop pickup and the salesman left. Salesman barely made it on the highway when the load came loose. He limped back to the shop and the kid says "I didn't think it would hold". The salesman blew a gasket! To this day...that quote gets used A LOT!
