At about mile 2000 of a spring break road trip (towing Heavy) disaster strikes. About midnight she hiccupped a little and I smelled what smelled like brakes. Look out the mirror and Im blowing tons of smoke. Gauges all looked good. About the time I hit the shoulder I had flames coming out the hood on to the windshield. All went down in about 45 seconds.
Wake up the wife when I see flames and threw it in park. Unbuckled my sleeping 5 year old twins and yank them out.
Ran to the toy hauler ripped the fire extinguisher off the wall and shot the hole thing up through the wheel well skirt. Didn't put it out. Grabbed another extinguisher out of my sand rail in the TH and was able to get it out. The hole thing only lasted 4-5 minutes. Damage is on top of motor. Everything plastic is toast.
Not sure what happened. Looks like an air conditioner line burst. Maybe secondary. Don't know. Lots of oil, antifreeze and fire retardant everywhere.
Stealerships 7.3 tech is on vacation but will be back in a couple days to put together a parts list for insurance Co.
Sad to leave her behind. I have a feeling Ill never see my baby again.
Man, that sucks! At least yall are OK and can fix the truck. I past a motor home on the interstate in arkansas one time that was burning to the ground, totally engulfed.

When the fire dept and state patrol showed up 15 minutes later they said 60 more seconds and it all would have gone up.
Nice work on your part protecting what is important....and good job saving the sand rail and toy hauler as well.
Did you loose steering or did the engine quit?
I wondering if you blew the HP steering line or an HPOP line.
4 seat long travel sand rail, 2 Lt 50 quads, 2000 cr500, atc 70, Suzuki ltz 400 plus all the gear, spares, tools and crap to do a 10 day camping/road trip. Could have been devastating.
Truck was still running fine when I came to a stop. Steering and brakes seemed normal.
HPOP line was my 1st thought but it all looked intact.
You said you looked out of your mirror and saw that you were blowing tons of smoke. Could you see if the smoke was emitting directly from the orifice(s) of your tailpipe(s), or was it a more generalized cloud of smoke pouring out behind from under the vehicle?
Did you happen to take any underhood pics? Since you were able to get it out so quickly, there's a chance a fire investigator might be able to narrow things down, but as you mentioned, there's a very good chance the insurance will just stay totaled and won't really care.
Glad to hear you are ok, and good on you for getting it out that fast, my first place to look would be the passenger's side fuel line at the clamp near the turbo pedestal.

As I read this, first glad everyone was ok. But ultimately I'm hoping to read back on this later and see you say "JUST KIDDING", as it is April 1st ya know. Boy that would be a harsh so joke, so assuming it is real....again glad everyone is ok and hopefully insurance takes care of you.
Also have to ask, was the Cruise Control switch recall done on the Master Cylinder?
