This is just for a special effect at cruise nights. Who's familiar with Grave Digger, the monster truck? His headlights light up a sickly red and it looks sinister! Really kool!
This is just an idea for mine, and I don't now how to go about it. Should I:
a) just get some transparent clingy red vinyl to put on and remove. Don't know how well that will hold onto the convexness of the bulb.
b) find some way to drill into the headlight and mount one of the newer accent light kits (like at Autozone) to glow in the headlight on a separate switch?
I have seen a replacent headlight for the old style round and rectangle bulbs. http://store.yahoo.com/gofast/headlights1.html You get the same basic look, but you can use the tiny halogen bulbs that new cars and trucks use. They are about $20 each for just the housing, no bulbs. These would save you the trouble of drilling into a fullsize bulb which would actually ruin the bulb due to lack of a vacum. If you wanted to you could easily mount another bulb of anycolor with the normal clear bulb, hook up a switch so the red turns on and the clear off or how ever you want it. Good luck.
Why is it that I've had a computer for 4 years, and just now gotten into a forum??!?! I have found more information and been able to give a little too, more quickly in the past few days than I ever have! Typically, you end up doing a ton of research for some answers, but here, you ask and WHAM! There's your answer!
Thanks J!
Hey, I was registered for this sight for at least 1 year before I ever actually got on the forums. Kind of sad, huh?
I hope I answered your question. I was thinking of cutting apart some old headlights to convert them to new bulbs (they are quite brighter), but that would have been a pain in the butt and still may not have been very functional.
I have seen pictures of trucks with these conversion bulbs and they look pretty cool if you're not a stocker.
FYI, John deer 1980s yellow tractors used a tail light that was both a red tail light and work light. It is a reglar 4" seald beem that had a 1" red round window on the back side. They used a 1156 bulb behind it. When the work light was off and the 1156 bulb was on it has a cool red glow. Maybe you can do something like this.
I was at the KKOA Spectacular this weekend and was talking to Gary Glasgow at Nightprowlers. He actually had the new sealed beam headlights (see lin from J Gibbs above) in 7". These have plastic housings, and an accent bulb already in place, set up with separate wiring. Crazy! It also has a neon tube around the circumference too, but I don't know that I'd hook that in....neon's kool, but that would look like a cheap bolt-on thing....kinda like those hot pink, double wipers of the early 90s!!! YUK! Anyway, Nightprowlers didn't carry the 5 3/4" but evidently RB's Obsolete does.
Just in case any of you guys are getting a similar idea. The link above carries the sealed beams w/out the accent lights.

I definitely don't think that putting red plastic on the bulb would be a good idea, but not because it wouldn't hold to the shape of the bulb. I think the REAL problem would be that after a night of cruising, the plastic would be permanently bonded to the bulb!!
Another problem: If you accidentally leave the red effect on while driving down the road, I am sure local cops will be issuing you a ticket. But what about green? Good luck, John
