2007 e150 possible rear brake problem

I have a 2007 e150 that after it sits over night to move from a stop I have to get the engine revs up before the tires start to move. Every once in awhile the abs light will come on then shut off I have not pulled the codes yet as I have not had time to take it to a shop.i know the rear brakes are going to need to be replaced soon but this started to happen and would like to figure out what it is. The rear has disc brakes. Thankyou

You seem to have residual brake pressure possibly on just the rear wheels. If this is the case revving the engine simply overcomes the de facto brake engagement enough to get rolling. I'm assuming once the gas pedal is released the van will quickly come to a stop?

This is directly related to the front ABS module. It has possibly failed or a restriction has occurred somewhere in the plumbing leading from the ABS module to the rear calipers. The flexible rubber lines could also be at fault as they're known to internally collapse and cause similar symptoms.

The ABS dash warning light is a sure indication something needs to be checked ASAP. Places like Auto Zone, Advanced Auto etc etc may have hand held scanners that can read ABS fault codes---give them a shot at retrieving those for you and report back.

Does this happen with and without applying the park brake overnight?

Before you set off, lift each corner and spin the wheel by hand to see if a wheel is stuck. Put the transmission in N and park brake off to check the rear wheels.

Once I get the van moving it goes fine and it does it again if I hold the brake pedal for awhile. Until I have done some driving then it stops.I do not set the parking brake at all, I just put the transmission in park.

I wonder if ABS can be disabled by pulling a fuse or relay. If so, disable it long enough to determine whether it's the cause or collateral damage.

If the problem is at the wheel, the usual suspects include:

- internally damaged flexible hose acting as a check valve.
- piston sticking in caliper bore.
- sticking caliper sliders.
- pad ears sticking to caliper bracket.

We're dealing with the last one in our minivan. Over 240K miles the pad ears gouged the caliper bracket to where they don't slide smoothly. I lube the heck out of it since at this mileage I'm not keen on replacing the bracket which is part of a FWD hub carrier.
