Did anybody see Dan Rather on the national news last night?

It was hilarious, he was reporting on the Cubans trying to enter
the US with a "boat" made from an old Chevy pickup. At the end
of the story, he said the Coast Guard sank it,......"Like a rock"!!!

That thing must have had a motorcraft oil filter in it-- you know what they say- "takes a little ford to make every chevy run" Next we will see a 72 F-100 doing the same thing, only it will be dragging another chevy barge cause it broke down

Actually, I was rather disappointed that the Coast Guard had the temerity to sink a 'ship' at sea... these guys almost made it. I thought it was very innovative to make a rock into a raft. Even had a prop run by the prop shaft... heard it made 8 mph, not bad for a bunch of 55gal drums...
But, still, 40 miles out to sea, and the CG sez it's OK to sink 'em? I'd hate to be out there in my own boat if they can do that with impunity... what was their authorization to sink a 'vessel'?

> what was their authorization to sink a 'vessel'

It was not a registered vessel of any country, it was a hazard, and they did not want it sunk by accident or otherwise, where it would hurt the coastal fishing or business. If it sunk 200 feet from shore and dumped 300 gallons of fuel into the water, imagine the outcry.

Cuba was not going to tow it back, the owners and drivers were not going to pay for it to be towed anywhere.

From the Coast Guard's view you can see where a four ton truck that all of a sudden loses its 55 gallon drums might not be the best thing to have on the end of your tow line.

Why should US taxpayers pay for that liability ready to happen. They did not sink a ship, they sunk a truck that would have dropped like a Chevy in a mild storm.

Understood, all of the above. ... ... ... But, I think these guys had a lot of cojones to put that thing together, and get as far as they did, only to be stopped.. at sea.. in international waters, not US territorial waters. I don't claim to know international law, but 'ships' at sea are not spozta be stopped in international waters just because you want to.. playing 'devils advocate'.. tom

I don't suppose the CG-ers desire to "blow up something" came into play....

Actually, they did the right thing by getting rid of it. Imagine if it had actually made it U.S. shores and someone had actually got it to run and put it on the ROAD.........
